Update from the Read-a-thon: The 4th Grade is on the top of the leaderboard after a busy Wednesday! Thank you to the Newbury Town Library Youth Services Librarian, Nicole Korodi, for being a Guest Reader at NES during #ReadforNES on Wednesday.
As part of the Read for NES read-a-thon, we welcomed our first Guest Reader today! During morning announcements, students were informed they had the option of attending a read-aloud during their recess, where they would meet the Guest Reader, who they were given 3 clues about:
1. I wear glasses.
2. I play the cello.
3. I work in a place with a lot of books!
When students arrived to the Story Room, they found Nicky Korodi from the Newbury Town Library waiting for them! Students enjoyed hearing a few read alouds from Nicky.
From the PTA: Read for NES returns next week! Get ready today by registering your student(s) and create their individual pledge page that you can share with family and friends to start raising funds! Sign up here: https://t.co/TittA011i5!
Fifth grade students in Ms. Fremont-Smith’s Social Studies classes have been learning about the 13 Colonies. As a culminating activity, students worked together in groups to create original board games about the colonies.
Students used the content knowledge they’d learn to write questions for the games, worked collaboratively to design the games & how they would be played, wrote procedural directions for players, created the game boards and pieces, and self-reflected on self-assessments.
Prior to February Vacation, we had another Continental Math League contest. Several students arrived to school early to participate! We continue to be grateful for the parent volunteers who help make these contests possible, and for all of Dr. Paige’s efforts to facilitate!
He performed amazing BMX tricks and to share messages of anti-bullying, living out your dreams, and achieving goals through perseverance. Thank you to PTA Enrichment Coordinator Ginna Seabolt for coordinating this assembly. It was a great time!
Prior to vacation, all students in grades K-6 had the opportunity to attend an assembly sponsored by the PTA. Mannie Noguiera, a professional BMX biker and motivational speaker, visited NES.
Fourth grade students study map skills and this was an exciting chance for the students to hear about how those skills can be used in a career — from mapping animal migrations to electrical grids!
Students in Mrs. McParland’s fourth grade class recently had the pleasure of hearing from a parent speaker, Mr. Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin visited the students to share about his experience using maps in his job as an engineer who works with Geographphic Information Systems.
In Science class with Mr. Williams, fourth grade students have embarked on a journey through time! While studying fossils, the students have created a timeline where every inch represents 1 year.
During the month of February, NES collected items to be donated in "goody bags" to The Pettengill House. Our Student Council organized these items (soap, toothpaste, deodorant, and other toiletries.) Thank you to all who could donate to local families in need!
