A radio pulse from another world just arrived — and it is not a greeting.
Sixty-four light-years away, in the glare of the young star Beta Pictoris, a gas giant about ten times the mass of Jupiter is broadcasting. Astronomers using South Africa’s MeerKAT array have isolated the signal to the planet itself: Beta Pictoris b. For the first time, a radio source beyond the Solar System has been pinned to a single exoplanet rather than its star.
The temptation to hear a message is understandable. The reality is stranger, and more useful. The bursts are short, repeating, and fiercely circularly polarized — radio waves that corkscrew through space between 0.85 and 3.5 GHz. That is the fingerprint of an electron cyclotron maser: electrons racing along magnetic field lines and dumping energy as radio light. In other words, an aurora. Not the pale curtains of Earth, but a storm on a world whose magnetic field is at least 1.25 kilogauss — thousands of times stronger than Earth’s surface field.
Beta Pictoris b orbits about 10 astronomical units from its star and takes roughly 24 years to complete a lap. It spins in eight to nine hours. That combination — a young, massive planet, a dynamo-powered magnetosphere, and a stellar wind slamming into it — can drive auroras of almost cartoonish power. The polarization even flips handedness from one observing run to the next, as expected when different magnetic poles and viewing angles rotate into view.
So no civilization. Something better for science: the first direct measurement of an exoplanet’s magnetic field. Magnetic fields decide how atmospheres leak into space, how planets shed heat, and whether a world can hold onto the chemistry of life. Jupiter already shouts in radio; now a planet around another star has joined the chorus.
The next move is obvious. Point the same technique at other giant worlds and listen for the aurora’s scream. The galaxy just got a new way to take a planet’s pulse.
The Labour Party died today.
Andy Burnham has been blocked from standing as an MP.
So when Keir Starmer goes, he'll be replaced by more of the same. So they will lose the next election.
So our choices are Reform UK or the Greens. That's it.
@cjmcgoogan@CornwallPFC Hello Cara, Helen was one of my best friends, we went to school together, and members of the Tavy MD group. Helen introduced my daughter and I to Powerchair Football.
Message to Keir: Do not underestimate the depth of anger people will feel about this disgusting decision. If you think it strengthens you I tell you it will simply hasten your demise. You could have shown magnanimous leadership but instead it’s cowardice. https://t.co/02Y8COpddM
Today, England's water companies received their worst pollution ratings since records began.
Rising bills. Soaring profits. Sewage in our rivers and seas.
Enough is enough. Bring water back into public ownership, now.
A difficult weekend for our WBA Throstles!
Despite a challenging weekend they did come away with some points and will be hoping to build on the positives next time round.
Keep going guys 💛💙

I want people to be proud of where they live.
Today we've announced £1.5 billion of funding to empower communities to build thriving high streets, parks, youth clubs, libraries, and cultural venues.
Supporting local growth.
Breathing life back into your neighbourhood.
We had another great training session yesterday, we continued to practice match related drills. The team is making progress. ⚽️😊 #CornwallPFC#PowerchairFootball#cornwallfa
Feeling immensely proud to be #SouthEastCornwall’s first Labour MP and to have taken the oath in Cornish today. Cornwall now has 4 Labour MPs, together we will fight to bring change to our communities🌹
The Cornish Labour 4 are on their way to Parliament! 🌹
@JayneKirkham4@Perran4CRH @NoahLaw4StAN and I are already getting stuck in on how we make the case on housing, sewage, transport, devolution, NHS, green jobs and so much more.
Duchy first, party second.
We have made history in South East Cornwall with our first ever Labour MP here. Thank you to the people who voted, and I want to give thanks to Sheryll Murray for her 14 years of service.
Whether you live in a town or a village, make a living on a farm, from the sea or in an office, I will represent each of you and be the fresh start we all need.
The hard work starts now.
Less than 3 hours to go until polling stations close at 10pm.
Every single vote will make a difference here in South East Cornwall where things are neck and neck with the Conservatives.
If you want to see change, vote Labour today 🌹
