The school pupil and workforce census figures released today are a shocking indictment of this Government’s record.
More teachers are leaving the profession prior to retirement than ever before. And fewer newly qualified teachers are entering the profession, this year it dropped by a fifth.
Gillian Keegan: "It's great there's a 60% increase in FSM students going to Uni":
https://t.co/DoYkf0R1tc.
However the num. of students eligible for FSM has increased by 76%:

The only thing this Gov can take credit for is driving more ppl into poverty
More teacher vacancies are chasing fewer new trainees, which means a squeeze on teacher supply

.@cyclingkev and @MaryBoustedNEU had a meeting with @GillianKeegan this afternoon, to present the facts on teachers and support staff pay and how it has declined in real terms since 2010. #PayUp#SaveOurSchools

Teachers' pay has fallen in real terms since 2010. But has this happened to the same extent in other OECD countries?
OECD data says no. England is an outlier for teacher pay growth 2010-2020
The new recruitment figures for Initial Teacher Training in 2022/23 are devastating. According to the Government’s own statistics, almost a third fewer trainees began teacher training in September than are required to sustain the profession.
The evidence underpinning the Government's "academies ambitions" in the Schools Bill is deeply flawed at best, as recognised by the Office for Statistics Regulation.

On the Schools Bill, Jonathan Gullis MP makes clear that the legislation remains under review, but that government are committed to their academies ambitions.
Experienced teachers have had pay rises that are:
❌ below inflation for 10 out of the last 13 years,
❌ with only small increases in the other 3 &
❌ this year's is the worst of the lot
How much longer can these attacks on our profession go on❓

What’s the truth about the 9% pay rise for teachers story?
The story this week is a confection designed by Govt to confuse the public.
Here is the truth.

@JackWorthNFER @breakingryan1 In R&R terms it's always seemed that what goes for maths & chemistry also holds for physics, but more so. So it's very strange to see targets going in such contrasting directions this year.
@JackWorthNFER Thanks Jack, do you have any thoughts on what's going on with the maths target? Always considered a shortage subject and a top Govt priority, missed targets for years running and yet trainee target reduced by 15% this year. Same true to lesser extent for chemistry. Anomalies?
In the midst of a pandemic, with the economy still depressed, these initial teacher recruitment figures are not good e.g.
Missed secondary target (82%)
Missed STEM target (73%)
Missed Music (72%)
Missed Computing (69%)
Missed D&T (23%)
Missed Physics (22%)
This ITT recruitment cycle has gone from very good to poor really, really quickly. It raises important questions about next year and beyond and potentially rockets teacher supply back towards the top of the policy agenda (or at least, it should)
Here's what happened, and why 👇
