“We have a bad habit of treating teachers as something between a social worker and miracle worker. It’s profoundly wrong to expect that schools can fix the damage done by the rest of society’s problems.” @Ross_Greer#SGPconf
Reasons there is a Teachers strike:
- Pay has declined 24%
- Per pupil funding is below 2010 levels
- Workloads are unmanageable.
- We can't recruit/retain teachers or support staff.
Not reasons for a Teachers strike:
- "Militant" Trade Union leaders.

The offer to Scotland's teachers is not 6.85% - that's just @scotgov spin.
The average value of the 'new' offer to teachers is 5.07%.
Basically, it's a reheated version of the same 5% offer our members overwhelming rejected in a ballot 3 months ago.
@BBCNewsnight
Good to see the fact that the 'new' pay offer is eerily similar to the old pay offer is starting to be reported in the media. Teachers deserve better! #PayAttention
Teachers take to the streets for first national strike over pay in nearly 40 years https://t.co/U4hsS4ipPd
This offer is nothing less than an abject insult to Scotland’s hard-working teaching professionals. After months of prevarication & weeks of empty promises, COSLA & SG come back with an offer than is worth that same 5% to the vast majority of teachers. https://t.co/zOPKSnU2Qf
An amazing result for our friends in Scotland.
Solidarity with every teacher in Scotland who has voted for action.
@NEUnion members! Make sure you've posted your ballot off.
Let's fight together for the future of education.
I voted yes, a decision I did not make lightly, and here’s why.
After a decade of wage stagnation and real terms pay cuts, the recent pay rises were much needed but NOT fully funded. This means the increases eat into vital funds needed to ensure a good quality of education.

The @NEUnion is proud to have signed this joint letter to ministers calling for an urgent expansion of free school meals. As education leaders we know children need to be well fed to learn and thrive. #FeedTheFuture#FreeSchoolMealsForAll

It’s so important that both NEU and NASUWT are both talking about ballots.
Together the profession is united.
As a past president of the NEU I really welcome the chance of us working together.
