Tags at the bases aren’t a cookie-cutter thing, but here’s what we’ve seen work.

As you get to the base, don’t immediately straddle the bag. If the throw takes you up the line, you’ve put yourself in a tough position to adjust.

Instead, approach the base with your feet in a position that allows you to maintain your lane and work up the line if needed. If the throw is accurate, drop step into your straddle and apply the tag.

One of the biggest keys: Don’t reach out for the ball and then bring it back to the runner for the tag. That extra movement is significantly slower on a play where inches and fractions of a second matter.

Be aggressive getting to the bag on time, but stay in your lower half. That allows you to work up the line under control and still give yourself a chance to make a play on an inaccurate throw.

And sometimes there simply isn’t a play to make. Know when to keep the ball in front of you, prevent the extra 90 feet, eat it, and tip your cap.

Give yourself a chance to make the great play without turning one base into two.

Well, that’s a wrap on the 2026 13U season for Pt78!

Pt78 played an incredible game today vs the NE Mariners. Going down 2-0 early, Pt78 battled every pitch & inning and eventually tied it up 2-2 in the top of the 7th. But with two outs in the bottom of the 7th, the Mariners got a hit with a runner on 2nd to win in a walk off. Such a great game by both teams.

Couldn’t be prouder of the way these boys competed and got better all season. Already looking forward to Fall Ball and the 2027 14U season with these boys!

Speaking of next year, stay tuned, we’ll have some exciting Pt78 news coming soon! 😉

And, we would also like to give a big shoutout and thank you to @RipkenBaseball and the Pigeon Forge, TN Blue Smoke Experience! What an incredible venue, and well run event. It was a wonderful setting for our final tournament of the year. Could not recommend it enough!!

Pt78 is getting their sea legs in Pigeon Forge! After dropping game 1 this morning to the Royals 16-4, the bats were on 🔥 in game 2! Pt78 hitters slugged 16 hits in a 13-9 W over the Washington Township Minutmen!
