⚖️ NHAI Successfully Defends Arbitration Case, Safeguarding Public Funds!
NHAI has successfully defended its contractual position in an arbitration case concerning the six-laning of the 93.5 km long Chittorgarh–Udaipur section of NH-76 in #Rajasthan. The three-member Arbitral Tribunal under the Society for Affordable Redressal of Disputes (SAROD) rejected the concessionaire’s claims amounting to ₹366.53 crore, including ₹238.18 crore sought as COVID-19-related prolongation costs. The Tribunal allowed claims of only ₹14.51 crore, along with a conditional refund of ₹2.82 crore to the concessionaire.
Further strengthening NHAI’s position, the Tribunal awarded ₹33.54 crore in principal counter-claims in favour of NHAI. These include ₹27 crore for recovery of work dropped from the project scope, ₹4.03 crore for failure to maintain the highway, and ₹2.51 crore towards unauthorised toll collection after the project’s completion in March 2021. The ruling marks a significant step in safeguarding public resources and upholding contractual accountability in National Highway projects.

🛣️ Strengthening Safety and Quality of National Highway Infrastructure!
NHAI introduces a uniform mechanism for independent checking of designs and drawings of major bridges, viaducts and other critical structures to strengthen structural safety, quality assurance and durability across National Highway projects.
Under the new policy, designs will be independently examined by empanelled IITs, reputed government technical institutions and experienced technical firms. The checks will cover structural design calculations, analysis and drawings, along with hydrological and hydraulic studies wherever applicable, helping identify potential design issues at an early stage and ensure compliance with applicable IRC codes, technical specifications and contractual requirements.
The policy covers major river bridges with a design discharge of 3,000 cubic metres per second or more, structures with an individual effective span of 40 metres or more, and other special or complex structures identified by NHAI. Following independent verification, necessary design modifications will be considered before review or approval by NHAI, as per the applicable contractual provisions.
Effective 1 December 2026, the policy will apply to all new EPC, HAM and BOT National Highway projects, as well as eligible projects where design verification or proof checking has not yet commenced.

Understanding Wildlife Mitigation Structures | Animal Overpasses
Animal overpasses, also known as eco-ducts or green bridges, help wildlife cross National Highways safely while maintaining connectivity between natural habitats. Covered with soil and vegetation, these structures, supported by guide fencing, help reduce wildlife–vehicle collisions and habitat fragmentation.
From NH-130CD in Chhattisgarh and Odisha to NH 363 in Telangana, these initiatives reflect the importance of integrating wildlife conservation into National Highway development.
