. @mhclg has announced that from 23rd December 2024, local housing authorities in England are no longer required to obtain confirmation from the Secretary of State before implementing a selective licensing scheme of any size.
Responding to this announcement, our Chief Executive Tracy Harrison said: “We welcome the Government taking away barriers to local authorities introducing Selective Licensing Schemes for private rented homes. Our members have demonstrated that Selective Licensing Schemes are an effective way of improving the quality of private rented homes, so this is something we’ve been campaigning for.
“1 in 6 private rented homes in the North has a Category One hazard, so improving quality must be a priority. While this reform is great news, to make the biggest impact it must sit alongside investment in local authority enforcement capacity and legislation which applies Decent Homes Standards to the private rented sector.”
