"Our Constitution places 'the family' front and centre but this commitment has yet to make its way into healthcare policies & practices for older people in nursing homes." Read the full letter from Gabriella @nhqi1 in her letter in The Irish Times.

How come “quality of life” does not feature in HIQA inspection metrics & is only vaguely referred to in reports? We all know the elements that make us happy. While clinical excellence is important, we cannot forget the importance of living a good life.

This makes for harrowing reading & is indicative of an outmoded model of care, where older people are seen only through the lens of their disability or illness & are not listened to.

Looking forward to participating in @TheLeftBankSD on 19th August @DCU to discuss the challenges facing social care in Ireland @UCDSocialPWJ In great company with @RoisinShortall chairing the expert panel discussion along with fellow panellists Professor Emma Dowling +@bmariaam
Highly recommend a listen to this informed interview with @sarahmdonnelly1 on behalf of @IASW_IRL as social work reflects on learning from what we know (and don't know) about the Emily case. https://t.co/odVjKFslCk
Thousands of families denied any form of truth telling process. Having begged Govt to intervene & help. Those who were bereaved in inhumane circumstances say its as bad now as the day it happened. Without those key details, they can not move forward.

Joe Boyle is part of the team @NHQI1. Read his letter in the Irish Times today, which conveys the outrage we all share.

Sexual assaults on nursing home residents https://t.co/Pk3xKm3fPx
Excellent Op-Ed @VGeiran@IASW_IRL 'NIRP report highlights deep systemic, structural + cultural issues...NIRP explicitly recommends a move to a social model of care, which sees the care setting as a resident’s home'

We need to demand change with one voice. There is strength in unity. Let's do it for Emily and the women who were not listened to. #wedemandbetter#rightsdogrowold
Calls for safeguards as sex offender admitted to nursing home abused other residents https://t.co/WLSM1IZh1l
Horrific, it is one report after the other of sexual assaults on ladies living in nursing homes. It is reprehensible that the safeguarding bill by @ColetteKelleher years ago did not progress to legislation.
#SafeguardingLawsNow@MaryButlerTD@LeoVaradkar @DonnellyStephen
It is easy to criticise political leaders but the fact @MaryButlerTD, Minister for Older Persons has yet to speak to the media about the sexual assaults of multiple women in nursing homes is so disappointing. Where is her leadership on this? Where is she?
It is long past time that our nursing homes adopted a person-centred model of care rooted in human rights and the needs and wishes of the individual resident.

Today's shocking report shows an outmoded model of care, where older people are seen only through the lens of their disability or illness & are not listened to. This happened during COVID, when residents were isolated from family members.

Please watch @AilbheConneely on @rtenews explain why the current safeguarding policies mentioned by @LeoVaradkar today fail adults in care settings, this is just part of her skilled & sensitive analysis of a highly traumatic report today. @IASW_IRL@Fergusodowd
