Pauline #Hanson might hate our country but I love Australia and I’m a proud Australian. I’m also proud our First Nations and Multicultural communities and our shared contributions in making this country one of greatest in the world. We are stronger together. #OneNation
Macquarie University is preparing to dismantle two foundational disciplines: Sociology and Politics. Under the current proposal, Sociology will no longer be offered as a major in the Bachelor of Arts, and 11 of the department’s 14 academics — including long-time colleagues I’ve known since my PhD days — are facing redundancy.
These are some of the most brilliant, dedicated, and compassionate educators I’ve ever known. Despite ongoing funding cuts and relentless pressure from senior management, they’ve continued to build rigorous, thought-provoking curricula that have empowered countless students.
Politics is also set to be scrapped entirely. Yes, in 2025, Macquarie University plans to shut down Politics — a staggering move in any context, but especially now. Among those affected is Dr Jumana Bayeh, the only Arab woman teaching Middle East politics in a politics department in Australia as far as I know.
The cuts don’t stop there. Macquarie’s world-renowned Ancient History department is facing a 50% staff reduction. Media Studies and Creative Arts will also be severely hit — areas where some of the most forward-thinking and creative academic work is being done.
This isn’t just an administrative shake-up. It’s an attack on disciplines that challenge, critique, and expose systems of power — fields that encourage students to think critically about the world around them. That’s no coincidence.
So where do 11 highly qualified sociologists go in a country where universities are making similar cuts across the board? And what happens to the students who still want to study Sociology or Politics — who want to understand society and participate in shaping it?
We are fighting this with everything we have. But we only have three weeks.
If you care about education, about critical thinking, about justice — please help us. Write to your local MP. Contact Macquarie University. Now is the time to act.
In 1945, six women pulled off a computing miracle.
They programmed the world’s first computer—with no manuals, no training.
Then, a SINGLE assumption erased them from tech history for decades.
The story of how ONE photo nearly deleted computing’s female founders: 🧵
Opinion | "Anthony’s predictable response to my two-word statement has reinforced just how poisonous Murdoch’s grip still is on the Western world," writes Grace Tame.

This, this, this.
Dutton performs better with young men than with young women.
But both prefer Albanese – and young men actually kinda like Albanese (net approval rating of +6) as opposed to kinda disliking Dutton (-6).
I wish polls were reported with less sizzle & more nuance
LNP Member for Stretton, Freya Ostapovitc accidentally revealed the LNP have a plan that won’t be revealed until ‘after’ they’re elected. Clearly signalling they will make women’s health care abortion a crime in QLD.
The LNP cannot be trusted to protect women. #qldpol#auspol
Furious Crisafulli’s ads claiming youth crime is out of control..
No it isn’t.. Youth crime is down 6.3%
All thanks to Steven Miles..
Putting kids in jail will not solve the problem, prisons are full as are rehabilitation centres
Dodgy @DavidCrisafulli’s whole campaign is based on a sham.
What a shambles of a media conference today from his shadow Treasurer without actual costs.
Not even at a high school standard.
This has to be the worst state campaign in more than a decade.
Deputy Premier Cameron Dick reveals when David Crisafulli was a Director of a training company he “didn’t pay his taxes” & “ripped off a taxpayer funded training scheme”, & that as an MP he’s “trousered $20K” for travel off the taxpayer despite “living 10mins from parliament”💥
Gezus. News all over @AlboMP for buying a house near his alt family. 🤦♂️
No mention of Dutton's property portfolio.
Only Labor held to impossible standards.
