Akhyurna Swain, PhD candidate at our lab, attended the 2024 Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, North America (ISGT NA 2024) held in Washington DC from February 19–22, 2024 and presented the research paper titled ‘Magnetic Signature-Based Model Using Machine Learning for Electrical and Mechanical Faults Classification of Wind Turbine Drive Trains’ during the ISGT NA poster session.
With its focus on the theme ‘Innovations for a Decarbonized Resilient Grid’, the conference offered numerous plenary and panel talks that provided profound insights into the latest advancements shaping the future grid landscape. Engaging discussions covered topics such as grid and climate modeling, insights into hydrogen integration, crucial innovations in DER solutions, future transmission systems, and decarbonized grids, leaving a lasting impression on the attendees.
Moreover, networking opportunities allowed interactions with esteemed experts and professionals from diverse backgrounds, fostering invaluable connections. Attending a conference of such high caliber undeniably fosters a deeper commitment to advancing research and meaningfully contribute to the evolving smart grid and clean energy sector.
Acknowledgments are extended to NJEDA and the Wind Institute Fellowship for their invaluable support.
NJIT's Simulated Power Grid Helps Engineers Plan for Car Chargers and Wind Farms
Increases in electric car sales and offshore wind farm construction are poised to both tax and bolster the American power transmission grid, so researchers at New Jersey Institute of Technology are building a grid simulator to help industry predict the effects and plan accordingly. The NJIT team is led by electrical engineering professors Marcos Netto and Philip Pong, who jointly received $500,000 of a $1.5M National Science Foundation grant. They will study system dynamics and sensors, respectively. The remaining funds will be shared among collaborators from Harvard University (control and reinforcement learning), Princeton University (power electronics), Purdue University (applied mathematics and machine learning) and the University of Connecticut (power system state estimation). All six researchers are co-principal investigators.

New Jersey Wind Week Triumphs in Inaugural Event at NJIT
The inaugural New Jersey Wind Week, held from December 4th to 7th at the Campus Center of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), marked a resounding success in advancing the dialogue and knowledge sharing within the burgeoning offshore wind industry.
Organized by NJIT with key support from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), this unique four-day event brought together industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders for a comprehensive exploration of offshore wind advancements.
Distinguished companies, recognizing the significance of the occasion, participated as partners in the Wind Week. PSEG, a prominent player, joined as a Silver Partner, along with esteemed Bronze Partners including Atlantic Shore Offshore Wind, Burns & McDonnell, Community Offshore Wind, Leading Light Wind, Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, OPAL-RT Technologies, and Rise Light & Power.
The Wind Week, co-chaired by Prof. Philip Pong from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within the Newark College of Engineering at NJIT and Chad Watson from PSEG, featured two pivotal events — the offshore wind bootcamp training and the offshore wind technology conference.
The offshore wind bootcamp training, a cornerstone of the Wind Week, delivered a comprehensive crash course into the offshore wind industry.
Nine subject experts from both industry and academia provided insights through eight courses covering essential aspects such as wind farm overview, generation, cabling, grid interconnection, standardization, HVDC transmission, offshore construction, wind policy, and operation and maintenance.
The concurrent offshore wind technology conference addressed the needs of offshore wind stakeholders, fostering networking opportunities and knowledge exchange. The event showcased student poster presentations, where aspiring professionals shared their latest research findings on wind power. The conference is technically supported by the IEEE Magnetics Society North Jersey Chapter.
"The success of the New Jersey Wind Week underscores the commitment of NJIT and its partners to advancing the offshore wind industry. We are grateful for the support from the NJEDA and the active participation of industry leaders. The event not only provided valuable training but also served as a platform for collaboration and innovation," remarked Pong.
The resounding participation from industry leaders, the comprehensive training offered, and the engaging conference sessions all contribute to positioning the New Jersey Wind Week as a pivotal annual event for the offshore wind community.
Plans are already underway for the next edition, aiming to further elevate the discourse on offshore wind advancements and sustainability. For questions or more information regarding NJIT's commitment to the wind power and energy learning and development opportunities at NJIT, please email [email protected].
