Today marks 31 years since the Srebrenica genocide, where more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were murdered in July 1995.
As the world remembers the victims and honours survivors, we are reminded that justice is not only about the past: it is about confronting denial, preserving the truth, and ensuring atrocities are never repeated.

Justice for Yazidi survivors is one step closer. On July 13, 2026, the Higher Regional Court of Munich is expected to deliver its verdict in a landmark case involving two alleged ISIS members accused of enslaving, torturing, and sexually abusing two Yazidi girls during the Yazidi genocide.
The case includes charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, and represents another important application of universal jurisdiction: allowing national courts to prosecute some of the world’s gravest crimes, even when they were committed abroad.
This is expected to be Germany’s tenth completed case concerning crimes committed against the Yazidi people, reinforcing the message that accountability can extend beyond borders. For survivors, every judgment is more than a legal decision, it is a recognition of the truth, a measure of justice, and a reminder that these crimes must never be forgotten.

NJW International shares global updates on human rights, atrocity crimes, accountability, and international law: making complex legal issues accessible to everyone. Stay tuned!
Accountability begins with documentation and documentation demands action. Syrians for Truth and Justice organization (STJ) has submitted a complaint to the United Nations Special Procedures detailing ongoing human rights violations against Kurdish communities in Afrin, Syria. The submission documents patterns of arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearances, extortion, and ethnic discrimination since 2018, including recent cases from 2024–2025.
This complaint is more than a record of abuses, it is a reminder that violations continue long after headlines fade. Careful documentation preserves evidence, amplifies survivors’ voices, and lays the groundwork for future accountability efforts.
Justice depends not only on exposing violations, but on ensuring the international community responds before they become normalized.

A landmark judgment for international justice: a Dutch court has sentenced a former pro-Assad militia member to 26 years in prison for crimes against humanity committed during the Syrian conflict. The conviction includes torture and rape committed against detainees between 2013 and 2014.
This ruling is particularly significant because it marks the first time a Dutch court has recognized sexual violence as a crime against humanity. It sends a powerful message that survivors of conflict-related sexual violence deserve recognition, justice, and accountability.
The case was made possible through universal jurisdiction, a legal principle that allows national courts to prosecute perpetrators of the world’s most serious crimes, even when those crimes occurred abroad. As international justice mechanisms face increasing challenges, universal jurisdiction continues to provide an essential path toward accountability when other avenues are unavailable.

Niger has formally initiated its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), marking a significant moment for international justice. If the withdrawal proceeds, it will take effect one year after notification, though the ICC retains jurisdiction over crimes committed before the withdrawal becomes effective.
For many victims of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, the ICC represents a court of last resort when national justice systems are unable or unwilling to act. Decisions that reduce access to international accountability raise important questions about victims’ access to justice and the future of the global fight against impunity.
Strengthening justice mechanisms, both nationally and internationally, remains critical to preventing future atrocities.

Today, we stand in solidarity with survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and reaffirm that these crimes must never be ignored or forgotten. Sexual violence is used as a weapon of war to terrorize individuals, families, and entire communities. Survivors deserve justice, dignity, protection, and access to the support they need: not stigma or silence.
At Northern Justice Watch, we believe accountability is essential. Ending impunity begins with listening to survivors, documenting violations, and ensuring those responsible are held accountable under international law.
Together, we can help build a future where human rights are protected, survivors are empowered, and justice prevails.
