An investigation has begun after a complaint was filed alleging that NewJeans member Hanni's visa information was leaked during her exclusive contract dispute with her agency.

On the 28th, pop culture critic Kim Sung-soo filed a criminal complaint with the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul against ADOR and its employees on charges of violating the Personal Information Protection Act.

He alleges that ADOR intentionally leaked Hanni's E-6 entertainment visa information, which it had obtained through the course of its work, to certain media outlets in order to gain an advantage in the exclusive contract dispute.

At the time, some media outlets reported that "if Hanni leaves ADOR, she would no longer meet the requirements for her visa and could become an illegal resident."

The controversy centers on two key issues. First, whether visa information is legally classified as sensitive personal information and what penalties apply if it is leaked. Second, whether Hanni would, in fact, immediately become an illegal resident if she left her agency. We examined these issues from a legal perspective.

Visa Information Is Not "Sensitive Information," but Leaking It Can Still Carry Up to Five Years in Prison

To begin with, information such as Hanni's visa type and expiration date clearly constitutes personal information that can identify a specific individual. However, it is difficult to definitively classify it under the legal definition of "sensitive information" (such as political beliefs, religion, health, or sexual life—information that could seriously infringe upon an individual's privacy).

That does not mean there is no legal liability.

ADOR qualifies as a personal information controller because it handles visa-related matters for its artists.

Under Korean law, if a personal information controller discloses personal information obtained in the course of its duties to another person without authorization, the offense is punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine of up to ₩50 million.

In other words, even if the information is not legally classified as sensitive information, leaking personal information obtained through one's duties to the media in order to gain an advantage in an exclusive contract dispute could still constitute a serious criminal offense.

Would She Become an Illegal Resident If She Left Her Agency? Here's the Reality

So is the claim that "if Hanni leaves ADOR, she could become an illegal resident" actually true?

Hanni, an Australian national, holds an E-6 visa, which is a residency status for paid entertainment activities and is generally issued on the basis of employment or an exclusive contract with a specific agency.

Accordingly, if the contract with the agency ends or the company ceases to exist, she would indeed lose the basis for maintaining or renewing that visa.

However, the end of the contract does not mean she immediately becomes an illegal resident.

When an E-6 employment visa holder's contract ends, the agency must report the termination to immigration authorities. The authorities then grant a short grace period—typically around 14 to 30 days—to allow the individual either to depart Korea or change their residency status.

In other words, even if the original visa still has years remaining before its expiration date, that validity effectively becomes meaningless. Within the grace period, the individual must either find a new agency and obtain approval for a change of workplace or switch to another visa category, such as a D-10 job-seeker visa.

Only if the individual remains in Korea without meeting those new requirements after the grace period expires would they then become an illegal resident.

It remains to be seen whether the police investigation will establish that ADOR intentionally leaked Hanni's personal information.

What NewJeans Lost After Min Hee-jin—and Why Danielle's Absence Made It Impossible to Ignore

No creative director gets everything right. But when you look at what ADOR has produced since the leadership change, there's something that doesn't really feel right. The problem isn't simply execution. It's perspective.

The current creative team seems to understand what NewJeans should look like, but not why the girls looked that way in the first place. Those are two very different kinds of knowledge. You really need to know and understand the girls for that. One can be imitated... the other has to be deeply understood.

That difference explains why so much of the recent work feels strangely familiar yet emotionally hollow. The nostalgic 90s elements are still there. The vintage styling is still there. The natural lighting remains. The worn interiors, casual poses, long hair, and editorial styling all echo the visual language that once defined ADOR and NewJeans. On paper, the ingredients are almost identical.

Yet the finished result doesn't carry the same weight... It's not the same "NewJeans feel."

That's because NewJeans was never built around props, nostalgic styling, or Y2K references. Those elements were only the surface. What made the group's visual identity remarkable was the way every creative decision grew out of a careful understanding of the members themselves. Styling wasn't used to impose a concept onto five girls... it was used to reveal who they already were. The members gave meaning to the clothes the wore, not the other way around.

Former CEO Min Hee-jin's greatest strength wasn't simply her ability to identify trends or assemble attractive outfits with NewJeans' styling team. It was her ability to observe people. Every hairstyle, every silhouette, every editorial, and every visual campaign seemed to begin with the same question: "Who is this member, and what makes her different from everyone else?" Only after answering that question did the styling begin.

That philosophy created something surprisingly rare in K-pop. The members never disappeared behind the concept. They weren't reduced to archetypes or dressed to fit a predetermined fantasy. Instead, the concept adapted to them. Fashion became a language that amplified their personalities rather than taking over them. Looking back now, that may have been the defining characteristic of NewJeans' visual identity.

That perspective now feels largely absent. The recent releases come more across as something assembled rather than authored. Instead of beginning with the members and building outward, it's more like they began with aesthetic references and worked backward. The result superficially resembles NewJeans, but widely misses on what made the group feel distinctive.

Nothing illustrates that shift more clearly than Danielle's absence.

When Bunnies talk about Danielle, it's usually her individual strengths that come up first: her expressiveness, the way she engages with the members and the camera, and her bright sunshine personality. All of that is true, but it still doesn't fully explain why the recent four-member pictorial feels so different. The real loss isn't just that there's one less person in the frame. It's that the member who quietly connected the group's different energies is no longer there.

What ADOR delivered feels less like a creative reimagining and more like a project where one person was simply removed from a framework that had always been designed for five. The remaining members have been awkwardly shifted around to fill the empty space, but the foundation itself hasn't changed. Because of that, Danielle's absence doesn't feel like the beginning of a new chapter... it feels like a void that never gets addressed.

That's what makes the whole thing so frustrating. The current creative direction doesn't seem to recognize what Danielle actually contributed to the group's visual identity. Instead of asking how each member balances the others or how the group's chemistry changes with one person missing, it feels like they simply placed four members into the same concept and expected it to work.

Sure, that's one way to make content. You'll finish the shoot, release the photos, and people will consume them because it's NewJeans. But that's not how you treat a group whose identity was built with so much care. That's mass production. It gets the job done, but it doesn't create anything memorable. It certainly doesn't feel like art.

I genuinely hope ADOR learns from this, because at the end of the day there are still four incredibly talented members whose futures are sadly tied to the company's creative decisions.

The real question is whether ADOR is willing to learn from what came before. Can they build on the foundation Min Hee-jin left behind and develop their own creative voice? Or are they more focused on performing—for the public, and for the courtroom—than on actually understanding what made the group so extraordinary in the first place?

I don't know about you but the new ADOR... I don't think they are the learning type.

ADOR and its employees were reported to the police on July 28 in connection with allegations that NewJeans member Hanni's visa information was leaked.

The complaint alleges that details such as the type of Hanni's E-6 (Arts and Entertainment) visa, its expiration date, and the status of her visa extension application were provided to a third party without her consent.

Beyond the question of whether personal information was unlawfully disclosed, the complaint focuses on determining whether internal company information was used as a means of pressuring an artist. If it is confirmed that someone within ADOR was involved in the leak, controversy surrounding the company's personal information management system and its duty to protect its artists is likely to be unavoidable.

Information regarding Hanni's visa became public through media reports citing "multiple music industry officials" between December 2024 and February 2025. Those reports included not only the expiration date of Hanni's existing visa, but also claims that she had not signed the extension documents prepared by ADOR. The controversy later escalated when some anti-fans filed civil complaints reporting Hanni as an illegal resident.

Kim Sung-soo, a cultural critic who filed the complaint against ADOR and its employees at Seoul's Yongsan Police Station on charges of violating the Personal Information Protection Act, told The Gate in an interview, "The investigation must identify who leaked the information and how it was passed to the media," adding, "If someone in a position of responsibility within the company was involved, it would constitute a failure of the company's duty to protect its artists."

The following is an interview with cultural critic Kim Sung-soo.

—"At the time, the cyberbullying against Hanni was severe… Who leaked her visa information?"—

You filed a complaint against ADOR and its employees for violating the Personal Information Protection Act.

- To summarize, I believe the agency itself was among those who either encouraged or failed to prevent the extreme cyberbullying directed at Hanni. The false narrative that she was an "illegal resident" spread widely, causing significant harm to both Hanni and her family. Information such as a person's visa type and expiration date is sensitive personal information that is difficult to know unless you are the individual concerned or an internal employee responsible for handling such matters. That is precisely why it deserves stronger protection.

If ADOR leaked this information externally in an attempt to restrict Hanni's activities, I believe it would constitute both a serious breach of contract and a violation of the law.

A cultural critic—not the fandom—filed the complaint.

- The fans had been preparing to file a complaint themselves, but they were concerned about potential disadvantages if their identities became known. As I understand it, there was significant hesitation because of HYBE's history of taking legal action against some fans who expressed critical opinions.

I see.

- After consulting with a law firm, I decided to take on the complaint myself in order to reduce the burden that would otherwise fall on individual fans while strengthening the legal approach. This complaint is not an emotional reaction from a particular fandom. Its purpose is to establish the facts clearly through a proper investigation.

It has been more than a year since the visa-related reports were published.

- At the time, the situation had become so serious that some anti-fans even filed civil complaints reporting Hanni as an illegal resident. Had the agency clearly explained the facts, the controversy could have been resolved much earlier. Instead, I believe they essentially stood by and did nothing.

Right.

- After watching the recently released content celebrating NewJeans' fourth debut anniversary and ADOR's response surrounding it, I concluded that this complaint could no longer be delayed. The quality of the content, released after such a long hiatus, fell short of fans' expectations, and throughout the process I felt there were issues with how the company treated both the artists and their fans. I decided it was time to hold ADOR accountable for whether it is truly doing everything it can to protect and manage its artists, and finalized the filing date for the complaint.

What do you believe the police investigation should focus on?

- Above all, it must determine who actually leaked the information and how it was passed along. The information at issue was personal information accessible only to a limited number of people, including Hanni herself, her family, and those responsible for supporting or managing matters related to her visa.

The investigation must thoroughly determine who disclosed the information externally and whether that individual held authorized access to it. If it is confirmed that someone in a position of responsibility was involved in the leak, it could constitute a serious illegal act that undermined the trust between the company and its artist. The investigative authorities must clearly determine whether a crime was committed and who bears responsibility.

What impact do you expect this complaint to have on future litigation or on the entertainment industry as a whole?

- If it is confirmed that an agency provided an artist's personal information to outsiders and used it as a means of restricting or pressuring that artist, it could constitute a serious breach of contract. I believe these allegations of personal information leakage could also serve as evidence in future legal disputes when determining whether the agency faithfully fulfilled its duty to protect its artists.

I also hope this complaint prompts the entertainment industry to reexamine how agencies collect and manage their artists' personal information. Information that directly affects an artist's legal status and ability to work—such as immigration status—should be managed under even stricter safeguards.

- As an adult, I want to say to the NewJeans members that I am sorry they have had to experience the reality that adults' greed can take away an artist's rightful rights and freedom. I believe that if they do not lose hope, the day will surely come when, together with their fans, they will once again be able to stand on stage and perform the music and performances they truly want, at the level of quality they aspire to.

Why is it important not to post or share Ador's new content?

This is a question many people ask us constantly, arguing that doing so will reduce engagement on NewJeans' official accounts, and the answer is simple, it's right in front of us. FOR MORAL AND ETHICAL REASONS!

The four remaining members under Ador didn't return willingly; they returned because a judge ordered them to, and they had to come back against their will. Therefore, all this new content was created against their wishes.

These four had to watch as their friend, their sister in spirit, was used as an example of what could happen to them if they didn't follow the whims of that corporation. This means that every photoshoot, every vlog, every public appearance for an event or schedule is carried out against their wishes. Sharing this content is no less than what a sasaeng does when they invade an artist's personal space.

Furthermore, sharing photos or videos of them in public appearances has an added component: you're exposing their locations, something that could end very badly given the hatred they've been subjected to for the past two years.

Boycotting isn't just about the content, but also about the context, the ethics, and the morals. If you truly love our girls and genuinely care about them, don't share the new content under Ador. Doing so goes against what they fought for in court and endangers their physical and mental well-being.

the expiration date of a foreign national's visa and the progress of an application for its extension are pieces of information that could never be known by anyone other than the immigration authorities, the individual concerned, and the agency handling the relevant procedures on her behalf.

even a journalist could not gain access to such highly confidential internal information through ordinary reporting. how, then, could it have been leaked to the public from behind the anonymous veil of "multiple music industry sources"?

for a young person of barely twenty who came from another country, her agency was not supposed to be merely a company. it should have been her sole guardian in place of her parents living far away, and the strongest possible shelter protecting her from the storms of the outside world.

instead, that sole shelter summoned a pack of wolves from outside and allowed them to tear at her most vulnerable point.

faced with this cruel betrayal, with the agency stabbing in the back an artist who trusted it and devoted her youth to it, we cannot help but ask, as human beings:

what, exactly, did they believe they had to protect that compelled them to go this far?

this case was not a simple act of negligence in which information was leaked due to inadequate management.

it was a deliberate and malicious act in which the most vulnerable weakness of an artist was intentionally seized and exploited in order to gain the upper hand in a private dispute.

as the conflict over the exclusive contract intensified, information concerning her visa was leaked to the media in an attempt to neutralize her position and create a narrative branding her as an "illegal resident."

the consequences were devastating.

although her visa was unquestionably still valid, distorted reports describing her as "currently residing illegally" poured out. dozens of articles included the term "illegal resident" in their headlines, and ultimately, even complaints reporting her for illegal residency were filed.

have you ever imagined the pitch-black fear that a young person of barely twenty must have felt when she woke up one morning in an unfamiliar country and found the horrifying scarlet letter "illegal resident" branded before her name?

a visa is not merely an administrative document. it is like an oxygen line that allows a person to breathe so that she may stand on the stage she loves and meet the people who cherish her.

and yet, the agency held that oxygen line in its grip and even sent an email to the individual and her parents suggesting that she could become an illegal resident if she did not give her consent, thereby pressuring them.

what, then, must her parents have felt after sending their precious child to a distant foreign country?

from across the sea, they could do nothing but helplessly watch as the dream their daughter had built through tireless work, day and night, and more importantly, the dignity of their precious child, were stripped bare and torn apart.

unable to suffer in her place, and unable to run to her immediately and hold her, her parents expressed their devastating anguish through tears, stating:

"speculative reports concerning the type and expiration date of her visa, which are items of personal information that there is no obligation to disclose, are pouring out and causing a serious infringement of her rights and interests."

the purpose of the personal information protection act is to protect individual freedoms and rights and to uphold the dignity and value of every person.

the right of a data subject to determine the use of their own personal information, the right to pursue happiness guaranteed by article 10 of the constitution, and the right to privacy and freedom in one's private life guaranteed by article 17 of the constitution are fundamental rights that no one may trample upon at will.

the foundation of the entertainment industry is trust between artists and the public.

nevertheless, if the personal information of an artist under an agency, which should have received the strictest possible protection, was reduced to a tool in a dispute, this goes beyond a private conflict between one agency and one artist. it seriously damages trust in the entire ecosystem of a healthy popular culture and arts industry.

the person or persons who carried out the disclosure remain concealed behind the anonymous veil of "multiple music industry sources."

it will be difficult to uncover the truth through a simple administrative inquiry or voluntary investigation alone.

only compulsory investigative measures, including searches by investigative authorities and inquiries into communications records, can clearly establish the source and route of the personal information leak, as well as the person or persons who carried it out.

we therefore earnestly request the following from the investigative authorities.

first, thoroughly determine the route and source through which the personal information was delivered to the media.

second, identify without fail the person or persons responsible who remain hidden behind the veil of anonymity.

third, strictly hold the corporation accountable for its responsibility to manage and supervise its employees, and demonstrate the full force of the law so that personal information may never again be used as a "weapon in a dispute."

esteemed members of the public,

the dream that a young person carried with her to an unfamiliar land must not be trampled upon in this manner.

this is by no means merely the story of a single idol standing beneath dazzling lights.

it is the story of every young person of our time who devotes everything they have to their work while dreaming of a better tomorrow. it is also the story of someone's precious daughter.

if a corporation wielding immense capital and power is permitted to seize upon an individual's vulnerability, use it to control and intimidate them, and trample upon their dignity, then no young person in our society will be left who can feel safely protected and pursue their dreams without fear.

this complaint is not merely intended to restore the reputation of one individual. it is intended to protect the dignity and rights of everyone seeking to realize their dreams in this country.

we ask for the public's and the media's profound interest and support so that the truth may be uncovered and justice may be properly upheld.

According to the complaint, ADOR obtained and processed information such as the type and expiration date of Hani's E-6 visa, the progress of her renewal application, and whether or not it was signed, during the management and residency status process. Kim claims that this information was released to the public between December 2024 and February 2025 through media reports citing "multiple entertainment industry sources" as sources.

In particular, Kim's side argues that information such as the "status of preparation of visa renewal documents" and "whether Hanni refused to sign," which were reported on February 11th of last year, could only have been known by Hanni herself and internal personnel at her agency who handled related matters. They also requested that the investigative authorities clarify the actual informants and how the information reached the media.

The complaint also included a statement issued by the NewJeans members' guardians on February 12th of last year as evidence. At the time, the guardians claimed that their personal information and rights had been violated, as approximately 70 speculative articles dealing with visa types and expiration dates were published in just two days.

In February of last year, some entertainment media outlets reported that if Hani left ADOR, she would no longer have an agency, and therefore might not meet the requirements for an Arts Entertainment (E-6) visa, potentially becoming an illegal immigrant. Following this, some anti-fans went so far as to report Hani to the Ministry of Justice as an illegal immigrant.

To the respected people of Korea, and to the members of the press gathered here today,

We stand before you today with heavy hearts, but with an unwavering determination that we cannot and will not back down. Today, we are submitting a criminal complaint against ADOR Co., Ltd. and its executives and employees for alleged violations of the Personal Information Protection Act.

There was a young woman. An artist in her early twenties who came to a foreign country out of her love for Korean popular culture and, through nothing but her sincerity on stage, comforted the hearts of countless people. For her, a residency visa was not just a piece of paperwork, it was a lifeline that sustained her life in this country.

Yet that lifeline, her most sensitive and vulnerable personal information, was ruthlessly cast before the public by the very agency that was supposed to protect her.

The expiration date of a foreign resident's visa and the progress of any extension application are information known only to the immigration authorities, the individual concerned, and the agency handling the matter on the individual's behalf. Not even journalists could obtain access to such highly confidential internal information through ordinary reporting. So how could this top-secret information have found its way into the public domain behind the anonymous curtain of "multiple music industry officials"?

For a young woman in her twenties who came from another country, her agency was not merely a company. It should have been her only guardian in place of the parents who were far away, and the strongest shelter protecting her from the storms of the world. Instead, that very shelter invited the wolves inside, exposing her most vulnerable point to be torn apart.

Faced with this cruel betrayal, the agency stabbing an artist in the back after she entrusted them with her youth, we cannot help but ask, as fellow human beings:

What, exactly, was worth protecting that justified going this far?

This was not a simple case of negligence in which information accidentally leaked due to poor management. It was a deliberate and malicious act of exploiting an artist's greatest vulnerability to gain an advantage in a private legal dispute.

As the conflict over the exclusive contract intensified, visa-related information was leaked to the media in an attempt to neutralize the artist's position by creating the narrative that she was an "illegal immigrant."

The consequences were devastating.

Despite the fact that her visa remained valid, distorted reports flooded the media describing her as "currently an illegal immigrant." Dozens of articles even included the phrase "illegal immigrant" directly in their headlines. Eventually, reports were even filed with the authorities accusing her of being an illegal resident.

Can you imagine the overwhelming fear a young woman in her twenties must have felt when she woke up one morning in a foreign country to find the horrifying scarlet letter of "illegal immigrant" branded before her name?

A visa is not merely an administrative document. It is like an oxygen supply that allows someone to breathe, to step onto the stage they love and to meet the people who cherish them.

Yet the agency seized control of that oxygen line, even sending emails to the artist and her parents conveying the message that "if you do not consent, you could become an illegal resident," thereby placing them under pressure.

And what must her parents have felt, having sent their precious child alone to a distant foreign land?

They could do nothing but helplessly watch from across the sea as the dream their child had built through tireless effort, and, more importantly, their child's dignity, was stripped bare and torn apart.

Unable to bear the pain in her place or even rush to embrace her, they expressed their anguish through tears, stating:

"Speculative reports are even being published about the type of visa and its expiration date , personal information that there is no obligation to disclose, causing severe violations of our rights and interests."

The purpose of the Personal Information Protection Act is to protect individuals' freedoms and rights and to uphold their dignity and value.

An individual's right to informational self-determination, the right to pursue happiness guaranteed under Article 10 of the Constitution, and the right to privacy guaranteed under Article 17 are fundamental rights that no one has the authority to trample upon.

The foundation of the entertainment industry is trust between artists and the public. If the personal information of artists, who deserve the highest level of protection, can instead be turned into a weapon in a dispute, then this goes far beyond a private conflict between one agency and one artist. It gravely undermines trust in the healthy ecosystem of the entire popular culture and arts industry.

Those who actually carried out the information leak remain hidden behind the anonymous label of "multiple music industry officials." Their identities cannot easily be uncovered through ordinary administrative investigations or voluntary inquiries alone. Only compulsory investigative measures, such as searches and seizures and the examination of communications records, can clearly establish the source of the personal information leak, the route by which it spread, and the individuals responsible.

Accordingly, we earnestly request that the investigative authorities:

First, thoroughly determine the source and transmission route through which the personal information was provided to the media.

Second, identify the individuals responsible who remain hidden behind this veil of anonymity.

Third, hold the corporation accountable for its management and supervisory responsibilities so that personal information is never again weaponized as a tool in private disputes.
To the respected people of Korea,
The dream that a young woman carried to a foreign land must never be crushed in this way.

This is not merely the story of one idol standing beneath bright stage lights. It is the story of every young person in our time who devotes everything they have in pursuit of a better tomorrow. It is also the story of someone's beloved daughter.

If corporations wielding enormous capital and power are permitted to exploit an individual's vulnerabilities and trample upon their dignity, then there will be no young person left in our society who can safely dream without fear.

This criminal complaint is not simply about restoring one individual's reputation. It is about protecting the dignity and rights of everyone striving to pursue their dreams in this country.

We sincerely ask for the continued attention and support of the public and the media so that the truth may be revealed and justice may prevail.
