June 12 is Women Veterans Appreciation Day. Today and every day, we honor the service, sacrifices, and contributions of women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This date marks the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act by President Harry S. Truman on June 12, 1948, which gave women the right to serve as permanent members of the military.
This day is important because it recognizes the unique experiences and challenges women veterans often face after service, including healthcare disparities, family responsibilities, and not always being recognized as veterans within their communities.
