Thankful for some wise career advice received early: software is only the tool, and not valuable by itself. It's the combination of domain knowledge and software that's really valuable, so time spent learning the domain pays.

@JasonOrthodox A job that pays you more net pay than your expenses, with enough buffer to cover for occasional emergencies. If you don't have a budget, make one and stick to it. Cut mercilessly on things you don't love (H/T Ramit) to lower the income you need.
