Virtuoso musicians talk about this all the time. When he was coming up, Steve Vai’s alternate-picking was a comparative weak spot, so he religiously drilled scales & runs to a metronome 8–12 hours a day for years. Eventually he realized that no matter how much he practiced, his alternate picking would never be as fast & clean as Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Yngwie Malmsteen, et al., so he leaned into legato technique, tapping, and his quirky "angular" style (his comparative strengths), and the rest is history.
Our friends and colleagues from @AstonPhotonics have a long list of sessions at ICTON 2025 this week in Barcelona! If you're attending, make sure not to miss them - including an invited talk from TRANSNET's Stylianos Sygletos with Nelson Castro https://t.co/yAitk7ziUI
New blog post on overcoming academic impostor syndrome. This arose from great discussions during our group retreat, and I decided to make it publicly available in the hope of providing some utility to #academia. #AcademicTwitter#AcademicChatter

A week ago, we celebrated Prof. Nick Doran’s 75th birthday and his extraordinary 40-year contribution to the field of nonlinear fibre optics. The event was an amazing opportunity to reconnect with former colleagues, collaborators, and friends from the UK and beyond. ✨
big secret to happiness is just liking stuff. finding more stuff to like. finding ways to like stuff you didn’t before. recognizing what it feels like to like something and doubling down on that. what feels frivolous is actually the whole ballgame
Boredom is a filter. Common ideas come before it. Uncommon ideas come after it. Sit with a project long enough to get bored with it, then sit a little more. The most useful insights bubble up after you get bored.
Our student researcher @NJosueCastro is another poster presenter @TopConference_ highlighting his research on reducing the complexities of the equaliser in Wavelength Division Multiplexing systems!

The skills needed for developing new ML techniques have little overlap with the skills needed for applying ML effectively. A bit like how chip design has little overlap with software engineering.
