Today is #Prinsjesdag (Budget Day) in the Netherlands! King Willem-Alexander opens the parliamentary year with a speech from the Throne and the government unveils its budget and plans for the year ahead. It's a celebration of Dutch democracy and its most important principles.

The highest medal of honour for humanitarian aid was awarded today to resistance hero Jan Zwartendijk (1896-1976).

Dutchman Jan Zwartendijk, honorary consul in Vilnius in 1940 saved the lives of thousands of Jews by issuing visas to them to escape Lithuania during World War II.
