Following a press conference in Albuquerque where local organizations and officials criticized increased ICE enforcement, House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong issued the following statement:


“New Mexico continues to struggle with violent crime, yet Democrats would rather attack federal law enforcement than confront the policies that helped create this crisis. Sanctuary-style policies make it harder to remove dangerous offenders from our communities.


Federal immigration law is still the law. Public safety should come before political theater, New Mexicans deserve leaders focused on protecting law-abiding families.”

Democrat Rep. Joseph Hernandez was accused of running naked through a Chicago hotel, banging on guests’ doors until police escorted him out.

Now he’s quit his reelection race, and Democrats are trying to clean up the political wreckage by handpicking a replacement.

There’s just one problem. Hernandez withdrew after the legal deadline had already passed.

According to the Secretary of State, if a ballot vacancy occurs within 90 days of the general election, the political party cannot replace that candidate.

@NMDEMS should not get to ignore election law because their candidate became an embarrassment.

Businesses look at taxes, regulations, workforce and whether state leaders make it easier or harder to invest and grow.

New Mexico continues to struggle with its tax and regulatory environment, and businesses notice.

If we want companies like Buc-ee’s, along with the jobs and investment they bring, we need to make New Mexico a place businesses actually want to build in.

New Mexico Democrats have found a new way to support local media. Taxpayer subsidies.

Senate Bill 151 created millions in tax credits for local news organizations and the journalists they employ.

That raises a simple question. Can the media fully hold government accountable when that same government is helping subsidize its payroll?

When Republicans are involved in controversy, party affiliation is often front and center. When Democrats are involved, the political label can become much harder to find.

Case in point: coverage has been limited of an incident involving a New Mexico Democrat legislator allegedly running naked through a Chicago hotel. Just days earlier, former Democrat House leader Sheryl Williams Stapleton was convicted in a federal bribery, fraud and money laundering scheme involving more than $3 million in public school funds.

New Mexico deserves a media apparatus that holds both parties to the same standard.

.@ICEgov arrested Edgar Chacon-Miranda in Santa Fe, and @NMDEMS immediately erupted in outrage over the arrest.

What they left out: Chacon-Miranda was previously charged with rape, domestic violence and child abuse. Those charges never went to trial because prosecutors failed to move the case forward.

This is the result of years of soft-on-crime leadership. Serious cases fall apart, victims are failed, and dangerous allegations never get their day in court.

Now Democrats are attacking ICE instead of demanding answers for how a case this serious was allowed to collapse. Their outrage is aimed at law enforcement, while the alleged victim and children are treated like an afterthought.

That is a disgraceful set of priorities, and New Mexicans should remember exactly who Democrats chose to stand up for.

Speaker Javier Martinez and Democrats want the Doña Ana County Commission to appoint their nominee to House District 37 just a few months before voters decide the race for themselves.

Filling a vacancy is one thing. Using that vacancy to create an incumbent in the middle of a contested election is another.

There is no urgency that justifies giving one candidate the benefits of office before Election Day.

The voters of House District 37 deserve a fair race, not a political process that puts a thumb on the scale.

Let the voters decide.

New Mexico ranks 44th in the nation for healthcare access.

Years of failed policy, including damaging medical malpractice laws, helped drive doctors and healthcare providers out of our state.

We made progress on medical malpractice reform this past session, but there is still more work to do.

We need to continue those reforms, join the remaining interstate healthcare compacts, and remove barriers to bringing providers here.

But healthcare does not exist in a vacuum. Crime, failing schools, a weak business environment, and the rising cost of living are driving away healthcare professionals and New Mexicans across the board.

If we want more providers, more families, and more opportunity, we have to address the root causes making people leave and make New Mexico a better place to practice, work, raise a family, and call home.
