Yesterday, in the House Health & Human Services Committee, Republican legislators voted against HB68, a healthcare recruitment program. They want to protect big insurance companies and privatized healthcare, instead of investing in keeping UNM medical residents in New Mexico after they graduate. This is another example of how we are NOT prioritizing patients and doctors, but choosing profits for corporations instead. Thank you to those who voted in support and got HB68 passed!

We will keep fighting for real solutions to the physician shortage no matter what.

A new ABQ Journal article reports that the debate over the number of practicing physicians is muddied by a lack of conclusive data. The so-called “patient-led” groups providing the data are backed by big insurance and corporate hospitals, focused on spreading misinformation and avoiding actual solutions. NMSOP is here to support the facts and uplift personal experience. We know the root cause of the issues and we are fighting for real solutions that will better the lives of doctors and patients in New Mexico.

Opening Day of the 2026 Legislative Session is here, and we are ready to fight for for justice, safety and accountability.

We are here to stand with survivors, hold corporations accountable, and push for policies that put people before profits.

This session, our priorities include:
- opposing caps on attorney fees or damages in medical malpractice cases that would limit survivors’ access to justice
- supporting medical licensure compacts only when they include real oversight, accountability, and patient protections
- advancing smart, people-centered solutions to recruit and retain providers, especially in rural and underserved communities

New Mexicans deserve safe care, honest leadership, and a healthcare system that values accountability as a strength, not a threat. We will be here all session long fighting for exactly that.

(Post 2/2) As the 2026 Legislative Session begins, we are here and ready to fight for survivors and hold insurance companies and multi-billion dollar corporations accountable.

We show up year-round to put people before profits, and this session is no different. We will stand firm against efforts that weaken patients' rights to seek justice when harmed or that silence survivors. We will stand against policies like capping damages or attorney fees in medical malpractice cases that will only benefit insurance companies and corporations.

At the same time, we will support thoughtful legislative action that strengthens the healthcare workforce without sacrificing accountability, including responsible medical licensure compacts, smart investments that help recruit and retain providers in New Mexico's rural and underserved communities, and efforts that bring real accountability for private equity owned hospitals.

New Mexicans deserve safe care and a system that works for people, not profits for out-of-state corporations. We remain ready to fight for it.

When corporate hospitals and insurance companies talk about New Mexico's healthcare crisis, whose interests are they really protecting?

In a recent op-ed published by the Santa Fe New Mexican, our Executive Director, Johana Bencomo, cuts through the disinformation and brings the conversation back to the people most impacted. She names the hypocrisy of corporate negligence and deflection, calls out efforts to silence survivors, and lays out what it actually looks like to strengthen healthcare without sacrificing accountability during this Legislative Session and beyond.

We have to protect the lives of children in New Mexico.

A recent article in the Santa Fe New Mexican highlights just how dangerous it can be when corporate hospitals put numbers before infants and parents in need. In a recent lawsuit filed against Lovelace, 21 families are alleging that delayed C-sections could have contributed to their newborn being injured or dying while in hospital care. Ardent Health aims to keep C-section rates low for financial incentives, but to a clear detriment to the lives of patients. This is just ONE of many private equity hospitals in the state, and it is clear that they don't track harm, and aren't doing much to prevent it. We need to start being honest with ourselves about who is benefiting from this narrative - it clearly isn't families in New Mexico.

Newborns in New Mexico deserve the best possible start to their future. We shouldn't have to question priorities and profits when lives are on the line.

A little bit louder for those in the back.

This piece from the Albuquerque Journal says the truth, clearly. In a deep dive into medical malpractice insurance payments, and pay-outs, from 1991 to 2024, the data shows that less than 1% of physicians were responsible for half of New Mexico’s malpractice payments during that time. 94% have never made a medical malpractice payment.

We don’t just call out what’s broken. We’re pushing for real, achievable solutions that protect communities and prevent future harm.

As legislators prepare for the upcoming session, we urge them to continue doing the hard work to solve the doctor shortage: advancing solutions that expand access, retain providers, AND strengthen patient protections – all at the same time.
