Chief George C. Austin joined the NNPD in 1947 and rose through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant, captain and major, before being appointed as the City of Newport News' first black police chief in 1975. He served as police chief until his retirement in 1983.

Today we celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who would have turned 92 years old on Friday.

Each year Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is celebrated as a national day of service and citizens are encouraged to give back and serve their community.
