Each NOLP node operates a little differently, but all emphasize learning leadership skills through real world experience.
At Columbia, our fellows use mini-grants to fund community programs, like science outreach to patients of a local pediatric cancer hospital.
Each NOLP node operates a little differently, but all emphasize learning leadership skills through real world experience.
At UCI, fellows manage a peer mentoring program & deliver monthly workshops for first-year grads on how to navigate grad life personally and professionally.

At UCSC, grads apply for mini-grants to fund programs fully of their own design, including outreach programs.
Currently Astro PhD programs are really good at preparing students to be researchers. But are they also teaching career skills like leadership, team management, communication, etc?

We are hosting a splinter session where we will lead a discussion on two main questions:
- How can astro depts empower grads to design/implement student-led programs?
- How can we include formal leadership training in Astro PhD education?
NOLP seeks to empower astro grad students to design and implement student-led programs and initiatives. Through these efforts, astro grad students learn invaluable leadership and management skills on the job while making an impact in their comminities
