Commemoration of 50th Anniversary of gross atrocities and massacres of innocent civilians perpetrated in Asmara and its environs in January and February 1975 by the Ethiopian army of occupation was held at Bahti Meskerem this afternoon.

Around 11,000 Eritrean innocent civilians were massacred in the indiscriminate killing-spree that continued unabated in all parts of the city as well as 57 sourrounding villages for over six weeks. Many villages were wantonly burned; and, churches vandalized as the army mercilessly massacred the helpless civilians who sought sanctuary in the holy places.

The poignant Remembrance Event, held under the theme: "We have not Forgotten", featured harrowing narrations from survivors; and, fitting poems and songs.

#Eritrea: 35th Anniversary of the Liberation of Massawa held in the port city this afternoon in the presence of President Isaias Afwerki, senior Government and PFDJ officials, and the wider public.

The Event, which was broadcast Live on Eri-Tv, featured naval parade (including versions of the pivotal fast boats deployed in the historic Fenkil Operation) and vibrant cultural programmes depicting the epic determination & heroism that characterized Eritrea's long war for national liberation and dignity.

Fenkil Operation: More than a Sheer Military Victory; by Simon Weldemikael

*Fenkel Operation, which saw the liberation of the strategic port city of Massawa, was a three-day battle that began on 8 February and ended on 10 February 1990. It demonstrated, once again and in the most eloquent terms, the military prowess and ingenuity of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front.
*Fenkil Operation demonstrated the EPLF's superb military coordination. For the first time in the history of Eritrea's war for independence, the infantry, mechanized and navy units fougt in unison with utmost precision in implementing their objectives.
*Operation Fenkil was carried out against the backdrop of the EPLF's spectacular victory (the demise of the Nadew Command) and the liberation of Afabet in March 1988. British journalist and historian Basil Davidson famously compared Eritrea's victory at Afabet with the Vietnamese spectacular victory over France at Dien Bien Phu.
*Fenkil Operation is solemnly commemorated every year in tribute to, and honour of, the heavy sacrifices of the freedom fighters - Eritrea's best sons and daughters. The Commemoration of Fenkil and other major military operartions also constitute profound historical reminders to posterity that the collective will of a small nation is indomitable in the face of aggression and injustice
