The best festive season of my life. December 2013. I had gotten vacation work at Sasol Mining Thubelisha Shaft in Secunda, which was a must for the completion of my engineering degree.

Had no relatives there or financial support, found a recently vacated backroom, luckily they had left their cupboard.

I had falsified my address during the application that i was from around e Mbalenhle, that's how desperate i was 😭

I never had a big brother or rich aunt, all i had was myself and the Transnet bursary

No bed, chair or anything, bought myself isipontshi when i got there. Traveled there nge taxi one man, with only my suitcases.

I only secured the backroom on arrival.

The entire festive season was eating instant porridge December throughout January 2014.

My pay was R11 000 per month 🤑🤑🤑.

For a poor young man from Bergville with no one, this was peak success
