The government strategy of ‘one fits all’ is not helping. Imphal is the area which is disturbed yet the education department shut down school across the state including the hill districts and other valley districts where there is no effects of the disturbance. Further, no schools in the hill districts heed to the school shut down order of the state government rendering the orders farcical and reveals the fracture and divide between hill and valley already existing in the Manipur state. The government impose curfew in entire Imphal city, but the current disturbance is only in Singjangmei area. The state govt should know how to target/pin point their actions and not let the pain/disruption be felt by the entire population. Sweeping orders are impacting the adversely popularity of the government which is already at its lowest ebb.

The message conveyed by three Naga students’ organisation of Ukhrul (including Kamjong), Tamenglong and Senapati districts to the Kuki Students Organisation in connection with the proposed Rally on 31st August 2024 can be termed as cautionary not to indulge in any politics remotely related to lands of the Nagas. These are very difficult times for Manipur and all parties concerned should tread cautiously over issues connected to lands in the “Hill Areas”. The Nagas have been watching the situation and they appear to be slowly realising, inspite of their religious affinity with the Kuki-Zo that their immediate rivals as far as land is concerned are the Kuki tribes whose lands they have occupied. Care should be taken to prevent old wounds from opening up between the Naga and Kuki tribes. History of atrocities go back to the initial days of migration by the Kuki tribes into Manipur and how they were employed by the Manipur Maharaj and the British rulers to terrorise, suppress, impose punitive fine and subjugate other tribes. History also reveals that when the Naga villages were vulnerable as their warriors participated in World War 1 effort in Europe, rebel Kuki irregular levies pillaged, murdered men and took women and children as slaves. The Kuki organisation should realise that the situation is highly inflammable and should not do anything that could be interpreted as provocative.
