Fun stage from the @nrlhunter Grand Slam 2026 finale match. We had to find a bobcat and engage it from 4 positions. Ended up finding it at about 620 yards.

This stage was a nice reprieve from some of the other stages. The target was pretty easy to find, the positions were simple and there wasn’t much wind. Was nice to stack up some points on this one. Most of the stages at the match were far less forgiving.

Clark and I started recording these videos for ourselves and they started taking off on social. We like doing them because we learn a lot watching ourselves. I notice mistakes I make in every video I post. Hopefully sharing our competition journey on here helps you and perhaps inspires some of you to try out the sport.

Full stage run from an @nrlhunter match in Price, UT earlier this summer.

It’s fun going back and editing videos from earlier in the season and seeing how we improved as the season progressed. One of the biggest changes we made after this match was our wind-call communication. We’d often say things like “favor right” or “hold on the chest.” Velayo suggested calling our actual hold in mils instead. It’s less subjective, forces you to pay attention to what you’re actually holding, and makes corrections after a miss more precise. That was a great change us as the season went on.

I also made a rifle setup change after this match that I regret.

Until this point I hadn’t changed anything with my equipment since I started competitive shooting in late summer 2024. I was really happy with my XLR Envy Pro, but I wanted to run suppressed and couldn’t make weight with a can. Instead of making a few minor changes, I switched to a Foundation Ezekiel, which freed up enough weight for a suppressor and MDT ckyepod triple-pull bipod.

I shot the final three matches of the season with it and really wanted to love it, but I missed my Envy almost immediately. I really hesitate mentioning this because I really like Foundation as a company and what they stand for, but the amount of fore-end flex (particularly torsionally) really disappointed me. It felt like it was spring loaded when shooting off a bipod or tripod if I put even the slightest amount of force into the buttstock. I just wasn’t used to that coming from a chassis.

One change I definitely don’t regret: going suppressed. The Thunderbeast Magnus-S-RR with Recoil X brake has been phenomenal. Not taking the concussion from a brake over an entire match makes a huge difference.

After talking with Jaden at West Elk Precision, it looks like we have a way to get back into an Envy Pro next season without going to a carbon barrel or giving up my can and bipod.

Shot some wolves at the NRL Hunter Grand Slam season championship match

Stage 20 was our last stage of the match. 2 wolves at 405 and 365ish yards. Wind was a bit gusty but not too bad.

It felt good to end on a good note. It was a tough match overall but a lot of fun.

Excited for next season! We’re switching a few things up - new cartridge, new chassis, new barrels, possibly a new scope. Jaden Miller at West Elk Precision is cooking up something special for us!

We’re hosting a 1-day NRL Hunter Games match in Grand Junction, CO at Cameo Shooting & Edu. Complex the Saturday after Thanksgiving! They are awesome for brand new and experienced competitors. Hit me up if you want to give it a try. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the stuff.

Hornady Shooter Bennie Cooley Wins at NRL Hunter Grand Slam

Hornady® congratulates Bennie Cooley for his performance at the NRL Hunter Grand Slam August 7-9th, 2026, near Clovis, New Mexico.

Cooley used Hornady 6mm 110 gr A-Tip bullets in his 6mm Creedmoor to win the Factory Division and take Top Senior honors.

Just wrapped up the NRL Hunter Grand Slam season finale match in Clovis, NM.

Humbling, but very fun match. It tested every aspect of the game — marksmanship, wind, positions, target acquisition, and gear management.

We barely made the cut for an invite and were competing against a stacked teams division. Our goal was to not take last 😆 and we achieved that goal.
