Well done to all the students who gave these competitions everything to bring their schools home in first place! 🥇👨🏽🎤👩🏽🎤✖️➗
As cheesy as it sounds, maths confidence is the winner here. 💪🏽
Some collective stats, aggregated across the 5 state-wide competitions:
🌟 300 schools
🌟 1800 classes
🌟 27,000 students
🌟 18,000,000 correct answers
Fave quote from a teacher, "The idea of a competition really suited our students. In real time, they watched their results slowly overtake the third placed school (which was much larger than us) and the excitement as they overtook them was pretty cool."
It's our first year running these more localised tournaments and it's fair to say that Aussies love to compete!
@missradders@ATMMathematics For KS1 and KS2, play them one of these 10 min audio stories about maths mindsets needed to become more resilient and confident in maths. Combines storytelling and maths, with activities for each one that can be done as a class activity https://t.co/FiJoiS8u7m
Can't stop smiling.
-- Harare, Zimbabwe --
Last week, over 50 stellar students from seven Zim schools took part in a @TTRockStars tournament, known locally as "Hall of Fame event".
Why does this mean so much to me? I think it's appreciation for the time, love and effort that went into organising the day; the pride on the students' faces; and witnessing a celebration of maths skills in a context so far from my own.
☺️Happy teachers, happy students, happy Bruno.

Without a doubt, the MTC has given the impetus for (even) better teaching practice around the times tables. Yes, there's a greater emphasis on retrieval than there was before, but as a result of the nationwide, inescapable push on teaching for mastery (another Gove legacy), teachers aren't settling for retrieval alone. All the conversations I have or hear about, it's very much "I want the students to know the tables off by heart AND understand the underlying concepts".
That's huge. It's a double win for the students.
And I think it's happening as a result of the combined MTC + teaching for mastery efforts. For any education reformers overseas looking to England, they should bear in mind it's been a two-pronged attack.
We're starting to see the results of these reforms (c. PISA) but give it a generation and these children will be grown-ups saying "I'm good at maths."
[That's a big call from me but England has set itself on a great course. I hope the prevailing winds don't change and we end up awash on the Island of Wishywashy Education.]
