An older adult with delirium is confused, may have hallucinations, and can be frightened by the experience. RGP Toronto offers the following tips to support communication: Stay Calm, Maintain Eye Contact, Introduce Yourself, Listen Actively, and Engage and Empathize.
There are several key signs and symptoms of delirium. Commonly used screening tools within the NSM Region include the Confusion Assessment Method; The Delirium Triage Screen and The 4AT. Tell us in the comments what you use to screen for Delirium.
Delirium can present in different ways. There are three types of delirium: HYPERACTIVE (restless, agitated), HYPOACTIVE (drowsy, lethargic) and MIXED. To learn more about the subtypes of delirium, you may refer to this visual summary by BMJ https://t.co/Lu5MWvpRT1
Delirium can often be prevented- it’s important to be aware of the modifiable risk factors. Refer to the SF7 Toolkit through RGP Toronto for more information. https://t.co/Dv4VwRhSQn
As we lead up to WDAD, NSMSGS will be sharing resources to bring awareness to Delirium in older adults. Consider how you might participate. Visit https://t.co/T5idAmoU5V for more information.
