“Making Justice Work” in the Northern
Territory brings together a wide range of groups with a common interest in
effective responses to crime in our community.
An important day for the Northern Territory.
Repealing mandatory sentencing is a significant step in reshaping the NT's criminal justice system to one built on evidence of what works, supporting safer communities and reducing expensive and ineffective overreliance on prisons.
“Courtrooms are not the places for Territory kids” Attorney-General @chanseypaechMLA opens the NT Children’s Court Practitioners Conference, proudly supported by CLANT.
It's 6 years since coming to power with a promise to repeal mandatory sentencing and raise the age of criminal responsibility, but congratulations to A-G @chanseypaechMLA and Territory Labor for taking these courageous steps down that road. https://t.co/m20ZQJQavh via @TheNTNews
A long-awaited, much-needed and highly commendable decision. For the record, we deplore spithoods on children. We also deplore spitting on police (and indeed, on anyone). https://t.co/EvJqLkmRyb

What does putting a child behind bars do for their development, and their future? These kids and their communities deserve a better approach, supported by evidence. More in our new report on the NT here: https://t.co/RpSE0e4PVl #closedondale#raisetheage
You won't see a story like this in the NT, where there is no available discount for a plea of guilty to murder, and no incentive to plead. End mandatory sentencing now. NSW man pleads guilty to murder of Canberra man Glenn Walewicz in Phillip last year https://t.co/UK2orMJoT4
"It is both disappointing and unacceptable that the Northern Territory has continued to ignore the recommendations of the Royal Commission and has not addressed this issue.” - Law Society NT #ntpol#auspol @idunnonews @ZiziAverill https://t.co/CbVY6cC2FN

Today we are honoured to announce the first group of supporter organisations for the Justice Reform Initiative. We support the work of these organisations and appreciate their support as we work together for a better justice system. More details here: https://t.co/GgOk4e7pOV
“At a cost of more than $123,000 per prisoner per year…not to mention the human toll of high crime rates, investing in evidence-backed measures to tackle the underlying issues … is critical”
