Newcastle United has finalised a three-year, £60 million ($80.6 million) front-of-shirt sponsorship agreement with South African sports drink company KNOX Hydration.
KNOX, which is already paying £6 million per season to rename Newcastle's Darsley Park training facility to "The KNOX," will replace Sela as the club's primary kit partner starting in July.
The structure of the agreement adapts to a unique rollout schedule and performance metrics:
Year 1 (2026-27): KNOX will pay up to £10 million. This lower initial figure accounts for Newcastle’s new home kit already going on sale last week without a sponsor.
Years 2 & 3: The annual payout increases up to £25 million, contingent on performance bonuses.
Training Ground Rights: The separate £6 million annual fee for the training ground naming rights and training sleeve sponsor remains active alongside the kit deal.
Total Value: If all bonuses are met, the combined agreements could reach £78 million over three years, averaging £26 million annually when amortised. This marks a financial step up from the previous Sela deal, which was worth roughly £22.5 million per year.
Newcastle and KNOX plan to launch a club-linked beverage line to generate additional revenue. This partnership represents a major commercial breakthrough for Newcastle United due to several critical factors:
1. Independence from Saudi Ownership
Unlike Sela, which is owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF)—the club's majority shareholder—KNOX has no affiliation with the sovereign wealth fund. Newcastle is actively attempting to diversify its sponsor portfolio. In the 2024-25 financial year, over 34% of Newcastle’s commercial income (£34.4 million) came from PIF-related entities, drawing scrutiny under the Premier League's Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules. Navigating away from purely Saudi-backed revenue helps Newcastle comply more smoothly with strict UEFA regulations.
2. Beating a Depressed Sponsorship Market
The market for front-of-shirt sponsors has slowed significantly following stricter regulations on gambling advertisements. With several Premier League clubs still hunting for headline partners, Newcastle insiders view this late-stage deal as a major victory that defies current market trends.
3. Navigating Financial Regulations
As the Premier League transitions from Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) to the new Squad-Cost Ratio (SCR) framework for the 2026-27 season, maximising revenue is vital. Newcastle’s commercial revenue has grown fivefold to £120.2 million post-takeover, but still lags far behind traditional "Big Six" clubs like Liverpool (£323 million). This independent cash injection directly boosts manager Eddie Howe’s spending power in the summer transfer window.
Because the deal was struck after manufacturing deadlines, KNOX logos will be applied to the jerseys locally outside standard production lines. Supporters who already bought the unbranded new home shirt will be allowed to have the logo pressed onto their kits free of charge.
David Hopkinson confirmed the club is still actively pitching for its first-ever front-of-training-kit sponsor, as KNOX will only occupy the sleeve of the training gear.
Could we see Victor Muñoz in a short like this next season? 🤔
