This was bound to happen. This government is absolutely horrendous in educating people and doing even a decent job of letting the masses know what the new policies and if it will affect them. A layman hears "Charges on UPI" and they immediately think their transactions will be affected. Did You Know That... A Tiny Chip Was Announced Two Months Before the Intel 4004?

When people talk about the beginning of the microprocessor era, one name usually appears first: the Intel 4004.

But the story is more complicated.

On September 17, 1971, Texas Instruments announced the TMS1802NC, a tiny integrated circuit designed to perform calculator functions.

It was marketed as a “calculator-on-a-chip.”

Instead of building a calculator from a large collection of separate electronic components, engineers could place much of the required computing logic and memory onto a single chip.

The TMS1802NC contained a CPU, ROM and RAM, and could perform four basic calculator operations. TI's announcement described a chip capable of complete calculator functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

And here's the surprising part:

The announcement came two months before Intel announced the 4004 publicly.

However, this doesn't mean the TMS1802NC simply replaces the 4004 in the history books. The two chips were designed for different purposes, and historians distinguish between early calculator chips, microcontrollers and general-purpose microprocessors.

The TMS1802NC is nevertheless an important part of the story because it showed how computing functions could be squeezed into a remarkably small piece of silicon.

Today, the idea of putting a complete computing system onto one tiny chip is completely normal.
Back then, it was revolutionary.

A technology that eventually became almost invisible was beginning to change the world one tiny chip at a time.

The computers in our pockets today are standing on decades of experiments exactly like this.
