On September 24th, Physics and Astronomy Professor Arthur Schmidt led a presentation as part of Northwestern's STEM Day. We're grateful for Professor Schmidt for always being involved with public outreach!
Please join us THIS Saturday as the @WeinbergCollege Physics and Astronomy Department presents the Inaugural Sievert Prize Lectures featuring Dr. Sapta Bhattacharya. This is the first of 8 lectures on "Particle Physics After the Discovery of the Higgs Boson"
Join us on Saturdays at 11AM from 6/18-8/6 for the Sievert Prize Lectures! Prize winner Saptaparna Bhattacharya will present on "Particle Physics After the Discovery of the Higgs Boson". This program is free and open to the public. Hope to see you there.
Congratulations to Dr. Cobi Rabinowitz for earning his PhD! His thesis title: "Characterizing the Internal Behavior of an Infrared Phototransistor Camera". We wish Dr. Rabinowitz the best of luck in his future endeavors!
Congratulations to Dr. James Bueghly for completing his PhD! His thesis title: "Search for Higgs Boson Decays to a Z Boson and a Photon". Wishing Dr. Bueghly all the best in his future endeavors.
Thank you @NorthwesternU Dr. Gerald Gabrielse and Dr. William D. Phillips for inviting us to such a fascinating lecture yesterday! Our students really enjoyed learning from you and meeting you.
Recently she has turned her attention to incorporating the latest ideas in concept-based teaching into Northwestern's introductory physics classes for engineers and premedical students, including the use of undergraduate peer instructors.
Brown has been teaching introductory physics at Northwestern since 1984. She has also served as an adviser in the College of Arts and Sciences. Brown's research interests lie in the area of theoretical astrophysics.
Recently we had a large group of students travel down to the loop and skate at the Maggie Daley Ice Ribbon. For many it was their first time at the park and one of their first times ice skating. We had beautiful weather and plenty of smiles and laughs were shared!
Physics and Astronomy PhD student Aprajita Hajela is the lead author on a new paper concerning the possible detection of the afterglow from a kilonova.
Congratulations, Aprajita, on this outstanding discovery!
Professor Fong also received a prestigious Packard Fellowship in October of 2021 and an NSF Early CAREER Award in March of 2021, adding to her long list of recent accomplishments.
Physics and Astronomy Professor Wen-fai Fong is the recent recipient of two major physical science awards, the 2022 Cottrell Scholar Award and a 2022 Sloan Research Fellowship.
Congratulations, Wen-fai! Your accomplishments never cease to amaze us.
Building on his previous work from the 1980s, observing highly-organized, magnetic filaments in the Milky Way galaxy, Professor Zadeh and his team have captured a new telescope image that reveals 10 times more filaments than previously discovered.
Physics and Astronomy professor Farhad Yusef-Zadeh has made a thrilling new observation of the center of the Milky Way, revealing a structure of nearly 1,000 mysterious strands up to 150 light-years long.
Congratulations Farhad, on this outstanding discovery!
Dr. Zhang received his PhD from the Department of Physics and Astronomy in August of 2020 under the direction of his advisor, Professor Adilson Motter.
Yuanzhao Zhang, a recent Physics and Astronomy PhD graduate, has received the 2021 APS Dissertation Award in Statistical and Nonlinear Physics.
Congratulations, Yuanzhao! We are very proud to call you an alumnus.
Dr. Zhang was recognized with the award for his โoutstanding doctoral thesis that advances our understanding of emergent collective behavior and symmetry phenomena in heterogeneous network systems.โ
