🔥Fires
2026WB004, 2026WB009 (Wood Buffalo National Park fires): The Government of Northwest Territories continues to provide mutual aid through air support, and wildfire crews are now deployed to the park to assist. For details on these fires and actions to manage them, visit : https://t.co/jrN8EcvhZV
Sprinklers are being maintained on values at Grande Détour and north of Salt River by GNWT wildfire management staff as a precaution.

🌡️Weather
Warming and drying trend is underway – with critical fire weather developing today and tomorrow in the Dehcho region, and severe fire weather in the South Slave and North Slave.
While some rain over the weekend made the forest less receptive to fire over the course of this morning in parts of the territory – particlarly towards Fort Smith – we expect rapid drying as temperatures reach the mid-to-high twenties through tomorrow and the level of moisture in the air drops.
The Dehcho region – where the southern part of the region is expected to see levels of moisture in the air reaching critically low levels today and tomorrow, alongside elevated winds.
North Slave and South Slave will also experience challenging fire weather over the same period, with elevated temperatures making their way up to the Sahtu as well.
💪Your responsibility
With critical burning conditions in parts of the territory expected, we urge everyone to be cautious on the land by avoiding any campfires that aren’t a last resort for survival, using ATVs only on trails, and to never burn without a permit, or during a local fire ban.

The gutters on your home provide a place for combustible debris to accumulate and open eaves create an entry point for sparks and embers.
Select gutters and downspouts constructed of non-combustible materials, such as galvanized steel, copper and aluminum. Ensure metal drip edge is in place as part of the roof assembly.
It is important to regularly inspect your gutters and eaves to identify any vulnerable spots or areas requiring attention. Keep these areas clear of combustible debris and properly maintained. Discover more FireSmart home safety tips here: https://t.co/smBbek0uYM
WILDFIRE UPDATE - May 31, 2026 – 2:15pm: 1 new fire as of this update in the North Slave.
🔥Fires
2026WB004: The Government of Northwest Territories continues providing mutual aid with air support and are mobilizing wildfire crews to assist Parks Canada in ongoing, coordinated response. For details on the fire and actions to manage it, visit : https://t.co/jrN8EcvhZV
Sprinklers are being maintained on values at Grande Détour and north of Salt River by GNWT wildfire management staff as a precaution.
ZF002 (Cameron River) : A large campfire was abandoned with heat and smouldering still underway near Cameron River. It was discovered by a wildfire crew on patrol on the Ingraham Trail and extinguished without incident. These incidents, which happen almost every year at this time, are a ticking timebomb. Fire weather conditions were critical yesterday and if embers made it to the bush, fire could have moved quickly. The scene is pictured below.
SS001 (Overwinter fire activitiy north of Fort Providence) : Over recent dry, windy days, wildfire crews have continued following up on their work to target hotspots picked up from overwinter scanning. No remaining smoke or heat picked up, which is good news. They are continuing to check hotspots they worked to ensure they are completely extinguished over the coming days.
🌡️Weather
FIRE WEATHER WARNING : WARMING AND DRYING TREND, LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY THROUGH MID-WEEK BEGINNING MONDAY – NORTH SLAVE, SOUTH SLAVE, DEHCHO REGIONS.
Cooler conditions across the North and South Slave regions today – with some rainfall possible through the Fort Smith area. Of particular note – some rain may make its way onto fire WB004, which would be welcome assistance to firefighters in their efforts.
Monday, a return to challenging fire weather is expected – with low levels of moisture in the air, higher temperatures, and no rain through the middle of the week in the forecast. A rapid increase in fire danger is expected – meaning fire could move quickly through the forest if it starts, and be challenging to fight. Be careful with any use of fire on the land and stick to any local fire bans in place.

Fires
2026WB004: The Government of Northwest Territories continues providing mutual aid through airtanker support for this wildfire in Wood Buffalo National Park. For details on the fire and its response visit: https://t.co/jrN8EcvhZV
Sprinklers have been installed by GNWT wildfire management staff and are being maintained in the Grand Detour area, with helipads in-place to assist in rapid structure protection efforts should the wildfire progress beyond the Park’s boundaries.
Additionally, structure protection is being mobilized to cabins north of Salt River proactively by wildfire management staff.
Weather
Heavy winds continue today in the North and South Slave regions. Rainfall was variable with the thunderstorms moving through the regions – meaning while fire danger has fallen in some parts of each region, there remain weather stations reading very high (Fort Smith) to extreme (McCrea River) fire danger.
Importantly, some rainfall did make its way onto wildfire WB004 – meaning a likely decrease in smoke activity throughout the South Slave region compared to yesterday.
Some rain in the forecast for the South Slave region through Fort Smith area heading into Sunday. Then, a persistent warming trend across the North Slave, South Slave, and Dehcho regions through mid-next-week is forecast.

Many homes have attached decks, which can spread fire directly to the home when ignited during a wildfire. The materials used to build the deck, combustible materials stored on and under the deck, and the vegetation around it all contribute to how vulnerable a deck will be to ignition during a wildfire.
➡️Start by moving combustible materials stored underneath and on top of the
deck to greater than 10 metres from home or store inside a FireSmart mitigated building.
