Four separate shootings. Three days. One city.

According to local news reports, Portland has seen:
• Six people shot at a house party in Northeast Portland, leaving one dead.
• A woman shot outside a Northeast Portland pub.
• One person killed on South Macadam Avenue.
• Two people injured in a shooting at the Rockwood Village Apartments.

A common theme? None of these events happened during daylight hours, and in the initial reports, no suspects were in custody.

Yet while Portland continues to struggle with violent crime, opponents, including the DSA, are fighting to keep the Enhanced Community Safety Initiative off the November ballot. The measure would redirect a portion of Portland’s Clean Energy Fund to hire hundreds of additional police officers.

Instead of letting voters decide, the initiative has become tied up in challenges over petition signatures, with thousands of signatures discarded during the verification process.

When shootings are making headlines night after night, it’s hard to argue that the status quo is working.

Mitch Green, Portland DSA (Democrat Socialists of America) city councilor decides that the burn ban rules don’t apply to him. He had a fire in his yard that got out of control and the fire department had to be called. He hasn’t answered any requests for comment.
