support youth by elevating community assets and organizations into crime reduction partners. increasing public safety and reducing youth system involvement.
@PeterMoskos I will tell you from the Nypd - recruiting minorities is not the problem. It is they get all the way up to the psych and because of implicit bias and systemic racism they are dumped. Not to mention the dept spends MILLIONS on salaries & consultants for PR - is it the right vibe?
@PeterMoskos Those who became cops to be rogue cowboys with 0 accountability of course would want to flee the dept - or if they think that behavior will get them arrested or fired. And don’t forget the good ol’boys who’d rather see black people in the back of the car not riding upfront w/them
@PeterMoskos Also would love to unpack the correlation to bad culture and lack of evolution to recruitment. Over the course of 170 years a lot has changed outside the police. Like a more diverse group to recruit from and a semi professionalization of the police with some kind of Oversite
@PeterMoskos If you looked at the raw data around recruitment for the Nypd you’d see that getting people to sign up to be cops is not the issue. Racism in the hiring process is.
@PeterMoskos the Nypd derived from Irish immigrants violently rioting and looting the political establishment. To quiet them, the elite paid them and gave them jobs as cops. Ironic that the roots of police is in rioting and looting and they were paid for peace and then given jobs
Great to join Officer Calhoun of @NYPD73Pct Jahlil and others from @NYCTogetherOrg to brainstorm solution-oriented ideas to fight gun violence! We must shut down the iron pipeline of guns and create a public safety model that invests in community.
