This afternoon, two people were stabbed in separate attacks on the Upper West Side. Both victims — an Asian male and a Jewish male — were removed to Mt. Sinai-St. Luke’s Hospital, and both are expected to survive.
The NYPD has arrested 51-year-old Raul Morales in connection with both assaults, and no other people are being sought. Detectives are continuing to work the case and determine motive, but according to victim and witness statements, Morales yelled “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks. The NYPD is currently evaluating whether this is a potential hate crime.
While the perpetrator has no known mental health history with the NYPD, the initial investigation suggests that mental health may have been a factor.
At this time there is no known link between Morales and either of the victims, nor between the victims and each other.
I want to commend the bravery of a good Samaritan who led our officers to the location where the perpetrator was hiding, as well as our NYPD cops who brought an end to the incident without further injuries.

This morning, nearly 800 recruits took an oath to this city and officially began their careers at the NYPD.
This is the first recruit class to enter the newly renamed Detective Steven McDonald Police Academy.
Steven's life was an example of courage carried across a lifetime, forgiveness made real, and a form of service that grew out of suffering into something enduring. His legacy will serve as an inspiration to every recruit who enters into the academy.
Congratulations to all our new recruits, and welcome to the NYPD.

Hey NYC: a Tornado Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service. It’s in effect until at least 9 PM tonight for all five boroughs. Let's talk about what that means and how to stay safe! 👇
What's a tornado? 🌪️
It's a violently spinning column of air stretching from a thunderstorm down to the ground, capable of intense winds and flying debris. Tornadoes are genuinely rare in NYC, but today the atmospheric ingredients are there for one to form, which is why we've got a watch. Worth taking seriously.
Watch vs. Warning:
🔹 A Watch (what we have now) means conditions are favorable for tornadoes. Time to prepare! 🔹 A Warning means one's been spotted or picked up on radar. Act immediately.
What should you do? ✅
➡️ Stay alert and keep an eye on the sky
➡️Subscribe to @NotifyNYC by visiting https://t.co/KxYXYC4WKt. Make sure your phone's emergency alerts are on 📱
➡️Know your safe spot: an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows
➡️If a Warning is issued, get there right away
➡️ Bring your people and pets with you! 🐾
Tornadoes here are uncommon, so no need to panic, but a little prep goes a long way.
Stay safe, NYC! 💙⛈️
