Last night, the NYPD recognized eight members of the department who have battled a life-threatening illness or devastating injury, yet chose to stay in the NYPD and honor their oaths of service.

These extraordinary officers endured circumstances that would have broken most people — they had every reason to quit, but instead found the strength to persist.

Their courage and resilience continue to inspire this entire department and make us all proud to serve alongside them.

The NYPD draws its strength from the extraordinary diversity of the city we serve. Our members come from different backgrounds and traditions, but they are united by a shared commitment to protecting New Yorkers.

This weekend, I was honored to join three of the fraternal organizations within the NYPD:
@NYDO_1993, @NYPDMuslim, and @NYPDSHOMRIMSOCI.

In these moments we celebrate the service of our Dominican, Muslim, and Jewish members of the department, remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this city, and invest in the next generation of cops.

Thirty years ago, Lieutenant Federico Narvaez was serving in the 70 Precinct when a woman stopped him on the street and asked for help. He went to help her, and in doing so, gave his life in service to another person.

Today, on that anniversary, we remember an extraordinary husband, father, and dedicated cop who served the city for 17 years, building a career defined by the promise of this profession: when someone needed help, he was there.

Years after his death, his daughter Katrina followed in his footsteps and joined the NYPD. She knew more than most about what this profession can ask of a family yet still chose to serve.

May Lieutenant Federico Narvaez’s memory forever be a blessing.

This morning, we gathered at the New York City Police Memorial to add the names of 42 officers who lost their lives in service to this city.

Among those we honored today were Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, former Chief of Department Joseph Esposito, and those who died from 9/11-related illnesses.

Each name represents a life that meant far more than we could ever capture in an inscription. By placing them here, we make a promise that they will mean something to generations of New Yorkers too.

May the memories of these 42 fallen members be a blessing.

The Columbus Day Parade returned to 5th Avenue today!

Red, white, and green decorated the parade route as the city celebrated the contributions of Italian Americans.

The NYPD made sure everyone could safely enjoy the day.

Dancers, musicians, and floats made their way up 5th Avenue for the Hispanic Day Parade!

The NYPD joined in celebrating the nearly 12,000 Hispanic members of the department.

As always, the Finest kept it safe for everyone!

This past Friday, NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes was stabbed multiple times during a robbery in the Bronx. Despite his serious injuries, Detective Mercedes chased after his attackers on foot.

Today, in another incredible feat of strength and determination, Detective Mercedes got up from his wheelchair and walked out of Jacobi Medical Center on his own two feet. Hundreds of members of the NYPD were there to cheer their brother on.

The entire department stands behind Detective Mercedes as he continues his recovery. And the greatest detectives in the world will relentlessly pursue those responsible for this crime.

Today, the NYPD welcomed 755 new recruits to the Police Academy, men and women from all different backgrounds who took an oath to serve and protect this city.

Among them is Sabbir Ahmed, whose brother-in-law, Detective Didarul Islam, was killed in the line of duty last summer. Even after experiencing such a tremendous loss, Sabbir still chose to step forward and join the NYPD — that is the nobility of this profession.

Congratulations to all our new recruits!

A promotion in the NYPD is an exceptional achievement. It's a mark of excellence, and the culmination of considerable hard work, dedication, and sacrifice.

Everyone who earned this distinction today now has an even greater obligation to this department and to the city they have sworn to protect — and I know they are up to the task.

Congratulations to all the members of the NYPD who were promoted today!

For 11 years, @MothersSaveNYC has marked National Day of Remembrance by saying the names of those taken from us, standing with the people who loved them, and making sure their lives are never forgotten.

None of this would be possible without the fierce advocacy of Jackie Rowe-Adams, who has dedicated her life to making sure that families devastated by violence are not left to carry that loss alone.

May we never forget these victims, and may their memories be a blessing.

I was proud to join so many members of the NYPD on Sunday at the African American Day Parade for this annual celebration of culture, tradition, and history!

Thank you to every member of the department who worked in the rain for hours to ensure everyone's safety.

NYPD Sergeant Ruben Cespedes has spent his adult life putting himself in harm’s way to protect others.

Nearly 17 years ago, while serving in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army, he was seriously wounded by an IED, but continued fighting to protect the soldiers beside him.

Last week, he was finally presented with the Purple Heart he earned that night.

He later brought that same courage and commitment to the NYPD, where he has also earned the Medal for Valor.

This is the nobility of policing. Congratulations, Sergeant Cespedes.

Today, the NYPD came together to honor and remember Probationary Police Officer Kamir Lou-Barria. Kamir tragically passed away last week.

He was a committed recruit, ready to help his city and make a positive impact.

We will never forget him.  #FidelisAdMortem

Over the past week, I’ve had the privilege of spending time with the cops, families, union leaders, and law enforcement partners who keep the legacy of September 11th alive.

At memorials across this city, at Ground Zero, inside our precincts, and at 1 Police Plaza, we remembered the members we lost and the extraordinary service that followed in the days, weeks, and years after the attacks.

But this week was also a reminder that their legacy endures in the men and women who continue to serve New York City today.

Twenty-five years later, it remains deeply meaningful to stand alongside those who remember, the families who still live with that loss, and the cops who have chosen to continue the noble work of the NYPD.

We will never forget those we lost, and we will never stop honoring them through our service to this city.

[Jessica S. Tisch @NYPDPC]

This morning, our nation pauses to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed on September 11, 2001.

The NYPD holds especially close the memory of the 23 members of the department who were killed at the World Trade Center that morning, and the more than 500 members who later died from illnesses connected to the rescue and recovery effort.

May the memories of all those we have lost be an eternal blessing. And may we always be worthy of the legacy they left in our hands.

[Jessica S. Tisch @NYPDPC]

Twenty-five years ago, New York City was attacked by terrorists who sought to inflict unimaginable death and destruction.

Today, as we approach that anniversary, we unveiled a new memorial wall at 1 Police Plaza honoring the NYPD members who took heroic actions that day and in the months that followed. There were 23 members of the NYPD who were killed on 9/11, and we have since lost more than 469 members to illnesses connected to the rescue and recovery effort.

This wall preserves who they were and the extraordinary standard of service they left behind.

May their memories be an eternal blessing.

[Jessica S. Tisch @NYPDPC]

Today, we unveiled the new Emergency Service Unit Memorial Wall at Floyd Bennett Field. Each of the 45 names on this wall represents a person who dedicated their own life to the protection of others, and whose courage came with no conditions.

At this space, their names will be among the courageous officers who carry on their legacies. This memorial is an enduring testament to what we have lost and a powerful symbol of the promise we keep to the families of our fallen heroes.

May their memories be an eternal blessing.

[Jessica S. Tisch @NYPDPC]

A promotion means that the leadership of the NYPD believes you are ready for more — more responsibility, more authority, and greater expectations.

Yesterday, we promoted members of the department who have earned this greater trust. These are men and women who put themselves in harm’s way, tirelessly pursue justice for victims, and show up for this city tour after tour.

As we mark 25 years since September 11th, we remember the NYPD heroes we lost that day, and their families who still chose service after unthinkable tragedy. That includes newly promoted Sergeant Joseph Vigiano, who carries on the legacy of his father, Detective Joseph Vigiano Sr., who was killed on that horrific day.

The NYPD arrested Jesus Acosta this morning.

Thank you to our cops, detectives, and New Yorkers for their work on locating him.
