🚨WANTED FOR AN ASSAULT: On Saturday, 6/28/25, at approximately 8:21 PM, two unidentified individuals were at the rear of 383 East 141 St, in the confines of the 40 Precinct. The unidentified individuals discharged multiple rounds in the courtyard striking a victim in the leg.
Officer Didarul Islam was called to New York City by the promise of a better life. He fulfilled that promise through service.
But it was the man beneath the shield — steady in spirit, generous in presence — who left the deeper imprint.
Everything for him was about building something — for his family, his mosque, his adopted city, and his relatives back in Bangladesh. They were all in his care, and he found peace in watching them grow.
Officer Islam’s journey is now stitched into the fabric of this city: the hope of an immigrant, the strength of a family, the quiet resolve to serve the place that had taken him in and made him its own.
There’s a belief in Islam — Sadaqah Jariyah — that the good we do in this world doesn’t end when we do. That there is true power in good deeds, and a life of service leaves a lasting trace.
Officer Islam’s watch may be over. But his impact will never be.
In the NYPD, there are certain honors that carry deep meaning — not because they mark a destination, but because they speak to the path it took to get there. To the service given, the sacrifices made, and the legacy left behind.
So today, it is my honor and great privilege to promote Police Officer Didarul Islam to Detective First Grade.
Detective First Grade is one of this department’s most respected honors — a symbol of trust, excellence, and the kind of judgment others depend on.
And while Detective First Grade Didarul Islam didn’t have the time to walk that full path, he embodied those qualities and more — steadiness, selflessness, and a commitment to serve.
May his memory be a blessing.
He gave everything to protect this city.
Today, @NYPDPC honored Officer Didarul Islam with a posthumous promotion to Detective First Grade.
We will never forget. Detective Islam’s legacy will live on in the heart of every NYPD officer.

After a 42 year career solving some of the city’s toughest cases, Detective First Grade Charles Freitag has retired.
He defined what it means to carry the gold shield.
Enjoy your well-earned retirement.

I had an amazingly experience last night helping the Det. Brian “Smiles” Simonsen Foundation and Santa give out toys to the kids of Richmond Hill and the residents of the 102 Precinct. The happiness and innocence of our youth inspires all of us to keep on giving! Happy Holidays!
Today I was honored to stand with Leanne Simonsen and members of @NYCPDDEA at the renaming ceremony for the “NYPD Detective Brian P. Simonsen Memorial Bridge”, in Manorville, NY. All who pass under or over the bridge should remember Brian and the ultimate sacrifice he made.
Today I had the opportunity to meet with several member of The Police of Poland “Policja”. Exchanging ideas about policing and safety with other agencies is always beneficial and we were happy to spend time together. @PolskaPolicja

To prey on the elderly is especially wicked. Such criminal acts are taken very seriously by the NYPD. Our Brooklyn Detectives will not rest until the pictured individual is behind bars. However, it will take a community effort to right this wrong and we can use your help. If you have any information please call 1-800-577-TIPS.
