We had more NZ #physicists than that at our conference just 2 weeks ago (we do count physics secondary teachers too). And don't try to tell us that #Barbie isn't also a physicist!
Congratulations to Professor David Wiltshire of @UCNZ on winning the @NZPhysics Dan Walls medal 👏 Prof Wiltshire's predictions about cosmology's biggest mystery: 'dark energy' will be tested by @esa's recently-launched #Euclid mission. Read more 👇

As we all head home from #NZIP2023 to various parts of NZ, the @NZPhysics Council wishes everyone safe travels. It has been a terrific conference and a wonderful time seeing you all. We'll do it all again in 2 years at #NZIP2025 !
.@novp , i.e. "the new @GeoffWillmott " is giving perhaps her first talk as @MacDiarmidInsti Deputy Director Commercialisation and Industry Engagement at #NZIP2023 on where the Institute's graduates go. Almost 10% to startups!
Heard in the #NZIP2023 session on Careers in #Physics - (paraphrasing) the physicist is the last person you fire as it's hard to find another one. In the (US) stats there is no change in unemployed physicists, even through recessions. So physicists are highly un-unemployable!
I am KEEN for this session at @NZPhysics conference!
I have always been passionate about helping our students see #HiddenPhysicist career pathways & highlighting jobs where #PhysicsGotMeHere. I am pretty proud of the @ausphysicscareer profiles (See next tweet).
Apparently stipulating that young school students should learn about atoms is a "a purist, siloed approach." Scientists horrified by new draft science curriculum https://t.co/jxfge4xxEk
Congratulations to this year's highly deserving winners of the NZIP awards!the inaugural winner of our new award - Te Tohu mō te Whaihua i te Mātai Ahupūngao – Physics Impact Award goes to Prof. Cather Simpson @ptolemytortoise#nzip2023 1/3
Matt McGovern telling us about the rate of change of physics teachers in NZ. Scotland (similar pop. to NZ) has a target of training 60 physics teachers per year and is managing half that. How is NZ doing (see photo)...? Find his full slides here https://t.co/zq5JoF91IU #NZIP2023
.@JodieBradby does experiments at high pressures - up to 100 GPa - using diamond anvil cells that are pressed together tightly enough to create the sorts of pressures you get in nature only deep inside the Earth. #NZIP2023
At the end of his intro Joachim gave us a physics puzzle to discuss! Now imagine 100+ physicists talking loudly to their neighbours about whether the mass of an hourglass is the same with sand falling as when it is still. #NZIP2023
Joachim: New this year for #NZIP2023 are topical symposia on focused physics topics. Examples are matauranga Māori, advances in light/matter interactions, space physics research and pedagogy in Aotearoa. Let us know if you like this and it might end up a permanent fixture!
Our President Prof. Joachim Brand has intro remarks - it's a very busy time for physics in NZ; from NCEA refresh to squeezed universities and potential losses of academic jobs, there is a LOT for us to talk about. #NZIP2023
