Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a post on X, “Students have designed 255 semiconductor chips as India expands chip-design capabilities across universities, boosting hands-on learning and employability.
The government has widened its semiconductor design programme to 355 universities, including institutions in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, giving students access to industry-grade electronic design automation tools.
Vaishnaw has previously compared the effort with the government’s telecom skilling push, under which 100 5G labs were established in academic institutions.
At Semicon India 2025, 20 chips designed by Indian students and manufactured at SCL Mohali were presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The initiative is part of India’s broader semiconductor strategy. Under Semicon 2.0, the government plans to develop one lakh more semiconductor engineers after meeting its earlier target of training 85,000 engineers in four years.
The programme also covers chip design, fabrication, advanced packaging, equipment, materials, research and development, and talent development.
