After their only son, Leland Stanford Jr., d*ed of typhoid at age 15, Leland and Jane Stanford founded Stanford University in their son’s honor.
Leland and Jane Stanford had spent years accumulating extraordinary wealth, Leland was one of the "Big Four" railroad tycoons who built the transcontinental railroad and served as Governor of California.
They poured everything into their only child, Leland Jr., who by 15 was already a passionate collector of antiquities and artefacts, travelling Europe with his parents.
In March 1884, while on a grand tour of Europe, Leland Jr. contracted typhoid fever in Athens.
He passed away in Florence on March 13, 1884, aged just 15.
His parents were devastated in a way that money couldn't touch.
Leland Sr. reportedly said to his wife the night their son passed: "The children of California shall be our children."
They returned home and began planning.
Within months they had decided to build a university in their son's name on their 8,000-acre farm in Palo Alto, not as a private institution for the elite, but free and open to all, including women, at a time when few American universities admitted them.
Stanford University opened in 1891. At the dedication, Jane Stanford said: "I have two millions of dollars more than I know what to do with. What shall I do with it? Build a university."
When Leland Sr. d*ed in 1893, the federal government froze the estate over railroad debts. The university nearly shut down.
Jane Stanford sold her jewellery, her silver, and her personal property to keep the staff paid and the doors open.
She kept his dream alive on the proceeds of her own belongings, until the courts eventually ruled in their favour.
These flash flood clips are absolutely terrifying because there’s no outrunning that, human life is extremely fragile and natural disasters always humble me. May all of their souls rest peacefully.
I have a theory that not everyone is ment to be skinny. Sometimes it ages the person. EJ is a perfect example. They looked wayyyy better with some weight.
