Iranian student #ArezooKhavari took her own life today after being sent home from a school trip for wearing jeans instead of the school’s recommended attire.

She had received harassment and threats for months for refusing the mandatory hijab and this seemed to be the final straw for Arzoo.

The school failed to offer condolences to Arzoo’s family or even follow up after the incident.

Not naked. No stripping. Just a girl who wanted to wear the clothes she wanted to wear and was driven to feel she was better off dead by adults who had been charged with protecting her.

The “mental health crisis” in Iran is called misogyny.

Today’s ban on women’s voices in each other’s presence comes from Mohammad Khalid Hanafi, Taliban’s Minister of Vice&Virtue, who published a 100+ page book of edicts against women last month. Every ban on women has a face behind it & must be held accountable for gender apartheid.

The @nytimes piece on Sarajuddin Haqqani, one of the main leaders of the Taliban government- with a history of terror attacks, kidnapping, and links with groups such Al-Qaida - posits that he is a “changed man” who can take the Taliban in a new direction. Two points: 1. It is important to recognize that Mr Haaqani is not alone at being open to a more moderate posture and to the West. They include Mullah Yaqub and Mullah Barader, among others, for example, also oppose the restrictions on girls' and women's education. 2. Should the US approach to these leaders be driven by the past and a desire for revenge, or by our interests and objectives going forward? I favor the latter approach, but we need to test their intentions and their ability to deliver. It is too soon to jump to happy conclusions. #Afghanistan @NSA @SecDef @POTUS @realdonaldtrump
