Today on FaceTime I saw the joy in my mom’s spirit as she talked about “her graduation” this week. Completing this PhD is by far the best Mother’s Day gift I’ve ever given her. #firstgengrad #MothersDay #firstgenphd #drbernard

@DocDantzler The question of who community is in community engagement activities is a concern. Folks who turn out to calls for engagement are usually the local elite/active retirees/similarly privileged folks & us conveners use their voice as representative of the working class masses.

Today I make my final weekend trip to my campus study spot. I’ll submit my dissertation to the system and I’ll finally be done with this PhD journey once and for all 😌 🧑🏾‍🏫🧑🏾‍🎓🍾 #DrBernard

For me I think the expectation is that I have an opinion on everything and when I’m quiet it is read as discomfort/disapproval.

This phd journey has been a test of both mental & emotional strength. We are in our heads SOOO much. When the stress to perform is high, &that pesky inner voice of doubt gets loud, a partner is best situated to identify it for what it is &provide soothing support b4 things spiral

As someone that has experienced both, I really appreciate this note & want to elevate this message. income loss is real, lack of household labor support is hella real, & most of I didn't anticipate how the lack of physical & emotional closeness would affect my journey to this PhD

something I feel like isn’t talked about enough is PhD’n while single is different from than while partnered.

I actually have to make my stipend livable for me vs having a partner’s income to fall back on.

nobody is cooking me dinner after a long day of teaching/writing.
