Krafton might pull the plug on Vietnam as local law doesn’t allow it to stay the same as the international model, and this unable to gain a licence. It is becoming tough for both parties to continue.

Here is why.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS on PC has faced a long-standing licensing issue in Vietnam that is separate from PUBG Mobile, which has an official Vietnamese publishing arrangement. The important distinction is between a game being accessible to Vietnamese players through an international service such as Steam and the game having completed Vietnam’s domestic licensing process.

Vietnam’s rules for online games include requirements concerning licensing, local commercial arrangements, player identification, age classification, content, payments and other compliance matters. Decree 147/2024/NĐ-CP, effective from 25 December 2024, strengthened Vietnam’s regulatory framework for online and cross-border services.

This creates an unusual situation because Vietnam simultaneously developed into one of the strongest competitive PUBG PC countries. CERBERUS Esports won PUBG Global Series 3 in 2024, The Expendables won PUBG Global Championship 2024, and Vietnam won PUBG Nations Cup 2025. Vietnamese sporting authorities have also publicly recognised these competitive achievements.

There is no inherent legal contradiction between those facts. Recognition of Vietnamese esports athletes and their international achievements does not, by itself, constitute a domestic publishing licence for the underlying game. Likewise, Krafton recognising Vietnam as an esports region does not automatically authorise commercial distribution of PUBG PC under Vietnamese law.

Reports in Vietnamese media in September 2026 have brought renewed attention to PUBG PC’s licensing position and the possibility of restrictions. However, the distinction we discussed is important: reports of possible blocking or regulatory action should not automatically be described as a confirmed nationwide ban unless Vietnamese authorities publish such an order.

Possible outcomes include Krafton regularising PUBG PC through the Vietnamese licensing system; restrictions while compliance negotiations take place; stronger measures affecting distribution, payments, promotion or domestic esports activity; or uneven enforcement while the regulatory situation develops.
