Freedom of faith and speech are under attack in Canada as a controversial hate speech bill advances through Parliament, critics warning it could criminalize quoting religious texts. The Combatting Hate Act has passed the House of Commons and is now under Senate debate, with opponents focused on the removal of Canada’s “good-faith religious defense,” which has traditionally protected religious expression from prosecution.

Under the proposal, critics say individuals could face jail time for up to two years for religious speech deemed offensive. I speak with Finnish Member of Parliament @PaiviRasanen who has faced her own high-profile hate speech case. She testified before Canada’s Senate Human Rights Committee this week, warning that vague laws can be applied arbitrarily and create a chilling effect on free expression.

The bill has drawn criticism from religious and civil liberties groups across multiple faiths, with the Senate expected to decide its fate in the coming weeks.
