#OnThisDay: In 1944 the follow-on phase of the Second Chindit operation began when a brigade was flown into the clearing 'Aberdeen' by Dakotas of No 194 Squadron. RAF aircrew with a signals section accompanied the columns to provide control of close air support operations.

#OnThisDay: In 1945 a #Lancaster (captain Sqn Ldr C.C. Calder) of No 617 Squadron made the first operational drop of the 22,000lb 'Grand Slam' #bomb. It was dropped on the Bielefeld railway viaduct, which collapsed as a consequence of the attack.

#OnThisDay: In 1940 the first combat took place between #Spitfires and #Messerschmitt Bf109s. Among the #RAF pilots shot down and taken prisoner was Sqn Ldr R. Bushell, who was later to mastermind the 'Great Escape' from Stalag Luft III.

#OnThisDay: In 1927 a modified Hawker Horsley torpedo bomber flown by Flt Lts C.R. Carr & L.E.M. Gillman attempted to establish the new distance record. It flew from RAF Cornwall to the Persian Gulf 3400 miles in 34 h 45 min. The record was broken next day by Charles Lindbergh

#OnThisDay: In 1918 six DH4 bombers of No 55 Squadron led by Captain F. Williams made the first daylight raid in force on Cologne. Bombing from 14.500 ft they caused considerable damage before returning to their aerodrome at Tantonville after 5 hours flight.
