It's been a year of loss, and no words can illustrate the sorrow of losing my mom Monday morning. I can only be thankful for the 42+ years she gave me, and feel relieved that she is not suffering.
I will miss her hugs, the "Gibbs" smacks to the head when I did or said something dumb, and the playful raspberries when I'd poke at her humor.
It pains me that I can't walk into her room and talk baseball or basketball with her anymore. I will miss hearing her yell at the TV when the Cleveland Guardians or Cleveland Cavaliers would play, although I am thankful she got to witness 2016. Those close to her know what both teams meant to her 😂.
I will miss her challenges in finding the title of a movie based on a quote or scene, and the amazed look on her face when I always figured it out. Or the little shimmy dance she'd do when I would have music she liked playing in the kitchen while cooking. I will miss the smile on her face when I would make her favorite food, grilled cheese.
She was my light during dark times, my rock when I needed strength, and my compass when I needed direction. She's the reason I never gave up, why I never gave in, and why I'll forever have hope. She may not be here physically, but I know she will walk with me every moment I need her to, and be that subconscious voice of reasoning when I need it most. I know she will be dearly missed by the many friends and family who knew her.
I end with a quote from a cross-stitched picture I bought her as a child that still hangs on the wall to this day because of the truth and weight it carries: "Although you are my stepmother, you will always be mom to me."
Rest peacefully, mom.
