A Dalit woman bought cloth from Mehboob’s shop in Balrampur (UP). Finding it defective, she went to exchange it, but staff sent her to Mehboob’s house, where Mehboob and Nadeem sexually assaulted her.

She complained to Mehboob’s father, Jamaluddin alias Changur ‘pir’ baba, who runs a large dargah nearby. He offered to “fix” it by marrying her to a man from his community and giving her money, on the condition that she converts to Islam, eats beef and wears niqab.

Changur baba told her he was too powerful to be touched and she had no choice but to accept his offer. She refused and went from one police station to another but got no help.

Her complaint was finally heard in another city, Lucknow, which helped expose the illegal conversion racket. UP ATS now claims Changur Baba masterminded a Gulf-funded ₹100+ crore forced conversion racket targeting 1,500–3,000, mostly Dalit, poor, and widowed women; used bribes, threats, and illegal foreign funds; built a lavish illegal mansion; and had links to criminal gangs.

Not surprisingly, not a single mainstream Dalit leader has gone to meet her, or the many other victims from her community targeted by Changur Baba.
