Why is Elon Musk so confrontational towards India, yet so accommodating towards Israel? And what happens when one billionaire has the power to influence communications, governments and global security?

This is about far more than satellite internet. It is about sovereignty, accountability and the extraordinary power concentrated in the hands of one private individual.

🇮🇳 INDIA: FOUR YEARS OF WAITING — AND PUBLIC ATTACKS

Starlink first applied for a telecommunications licence in India in November 2022. By October 2026, almost four years had passed.

The company obtained its telecommunications licence in June 2025 and satellite constellation authorisation in July 2025. However, final security clearance and other requirements have remained outstanding.

Instead of simply continuing to negotiate with the Indian authorities, Musk has taken his grievances to social media. He has accused powerful business interests of protecting monopolies, taken aim at India’s major telecom players and publicly challenged the country’s regulatory process.

But here is the elephant in the room: NATIONAL SECURITY.

India has legitimate questions about how a foreign-controlled satellite network would operate within its borders, how communications could be intercepted lawfully, who would control critical infrastructure, and whether the government could ensure that connectivity is disabled when national security requires it.

There has also been discussion of a government-controlled shutdown mechanism, often described as a kill switch. The crucial issue is whether Indian authorities can reliably stop or restrict the service in an emergency. An explicit refusal by Musk to accept a specific Indian kill-switch demand has not been independently established, but the question of government control is a legitimate security concern.

Why should India surrender control over critical communications infrastructure simply because the company seeking access is owned by Elon Musk?

And why should India be publicly attacked for insisting on safeguards?

🇮🇱 ISRAEL: A MATTER OF MONTHS FOR A SPECIFIC HUMANITARIAN LICENCE

Now compare this with Israel.

In October 2023, Musk announced that Starlink would support recognised aid organisations in Gaza. Israel immediately raised security objections.

On 27 November 2023, during Musk’s visit to Israel, an understanding was announced that Starlink services would require Israeli government approval on a case-by-case basis.

Then, on 14 February 2024, Israel approved a specific humanitarian deployment at the United Arab Emirates’ field hospital in Rafah, Gaza.

That was approximately three and a half months after Musk’s public announcement about providing connectivity in Gaza.

Read that carefully: the approval was for a specific humanitarian purpose at a specific hospital in a specific location. It was not unrestricted permission to operate throughout Gaza.

Israel retained security oversight, and broader commercial access was a separate matter.

Musk welcomed the decision and expressed appreciation.

Compare that response with his public attacks on India after years of regulatory negotiations.

Why the difference?

Both countries have security concerns. Both have the right to impose conditions. Both can decide who is permitted to operate critical communications infrastructure within their jurisdiction.

Yet the public tone has been markedly different.

🌍 STARLINK IS NO LONGER A SMALL SATELLITE INTERNET BUSINESS

Starlink is now authorised in more than 165 countries and territories, according to recent reporting.

Its network has become important to civilian communications, businesses, airlines, humanitarian operations and military activities. In Ukraine, Starlink connectivity has played a significant role during the war with Russia, demonstrating how strategically important a privately controlled communications network can become.
