Today Is KIN229. The Maya New Year, and Our 13th Anniversary.
Today, July 26, 2026, carries the Maya calendar number "KIN229." Its Sun Sign is the "Red Moon," its Wavespell is the "White Wind," and its Galactic Tone is "8" — these numbers and symbols are what make up today.
To begin with, this KIN number is born from the Tzolk'in, a sacred 260-day calendar. Through the combination of numbers 1 through 13 (the Galactic Tones) and 20 symbols (the Sun Signs), 260 distinct days cycle endlessly. 13 × 20 = 260 — this multiplication runs straight through the core of the Maya calendar.
And today, July 26th, is also the new year within the calendar system known as the "13 Moon Calendar." In this system, the year is divided into 13 months of 28 days each, with one special day added to complete 365 days — and within it, July 26th marks the beginning of a new year. Today is a day where the number "13" is layered, again and again, into the very structure of the calendar itself.
Today's KIN229, under the sign of the Red Moon, is said to carry the meaning of water's power — purification, and flow. There's something deeply symbolic about a "purification" sign falling on the very day a new year begins. Galactic Tone "8" is said to represent harmony, balance, and service. Purifying, while holding balance, while welcoming in a new flow — that's how today is positioned.
And yesterday, July 25th, carried the KIN number "228." That number is exactly the same one tied to Shohei Ohtani's birthday. Since the Maya calendar runs on a 260-day cycle, this isn't something that lines up perfectly every year — it's a coincidence unique to this year alone. KIN228 is called the "Day of Absolute Expansion," said to carry the power to expand the world through one's own actions.
Yesterday, I passed through a day of expansion.
Today, KIN229, I step into a new year of purification.
I can't help but feel there's something more than coincidence in this sequence.
The 260-day Tzolk'in is said to be built from planetary motion and the cycles of nature. The idea that humans, too, are part of nature, part of the cosmos, runs through the foundation of this calendar. Today's number "229," its sign "Red Moon," its tone "8" — each of these numbers and symbols gives today meaning not as just another day, but as a single point within a much larger cycle.
Whether the Maya calendar is one handed down unchanged from antiquity, or a new interpretation created in the 20th century — that debate matters less to me than how I choose to receive the number "229" that fell on today.
