When people say the cord is around the baby’s neck they mean the umbilical cord has looped around the neck. This is called a nuchal cord and it is very common. About one in three babies have it at birth. It happens because babies move a lot inside the womb and the cord is long and floats in fluid. As the baby turns and stretches the cord can slip around the neck. It is not caused by sleeping position sex lifting heavy things or anything spiritual.

Most of the time a cord around the neck does not harm the baby. The cord is usually loose and blood and oxygen still flow well. Babies do not breathe through their nose or neck in the womb. They get oxygen through the cord itself so having it around the neck is not the same as being strangled. In many deliveries the doctor or midwife simply slips the cord off the neck after the head is born.

Problems only happen if the cord is tight or squeezed especially during labour. When this happens the baby may show signs of distress like an abnormal heartbeat. That is why we monitor the baby’s heart rate in labour. In summary cord around the neck happens because babies move it is usually harmless and it only becomes serious if it affects oxygen flow.
