I am so incredibly proud of this report about the Restorative Justice Community Courts in Chicago. I spent many hours on this one <3 If you are interested in restorative justice, alternatives to incarceration, and/or strengthening our communities this is a must read.

How do gun violence and the criminalization of gun possession come together to impose multiple dimensions of harm and risk on the same communities in Chicago? A thread (1/6)
One year ago, Illinois became the first state in the nation to end cash bail.
The data shows that failure-to-appear rates, statewide violent and property crime rates, and jail populations have all decreased.
Illinois is leading the way to a fairer system.https://t.co/fpK8Yvf5sG
Judge O’Neill Burke says “converting [RJCCs] to gun deferral isn’t…making anyone safer.” We wholeheartedly disagree. Diversion for first time gun possession allegations remains necessary to reduce some harms and racial disparities in the legal system. 4/🧵https://t.co/mnQDPMxxHB

Illinois ending money bond is only possible because of the thousands of everyday people across our state that came together and said "we are not going to tolerate our neighbors being held in cages because they're poor."
Our movement has made history.
Today, the Illinois Supreme Court issued the strongest possible decision finding the Pretrial Fairness Act constitutional and directing courts across the state to implement the law and end the use of money bond on September 18, 2023. 🧵
